Ever since Josie hit Rank–4, their clearing speed had skyrocketed.
Anything below Rank–4 was basically fodder to her. They didn’t even stand a chance.
Eventually, Josie stopped getting her hands dirty altogether. She let the rest of the team handle the fighting while she just sat back and kept
watch.
The Blue Owl Squad was on fire. It was like they were all on a permanent adrenaline high. The second they spotted an undead, they were all over it. Josie and Zane didn’t even have to push them–the crew was more hyped and aggressive than ever.
Three days later.
Every single member of the Blue Owl Squad had officially reached Rank–3.
Back at the base, the Tier–3 Supers hadn’t managed to hit Tier–4 yet, but they were definitely getting stronger. They were sharper, more lethal. Whether they were taking on the undead or mutant beasts, they were handling themselves way better than before.
Lately, the undead and mutant animals were the main threat. Mutant flora was actually getting pretty rare.
And even if they did run into any, the second those mutant plants caught sight of Lirio, they’d turn tail and bolt. They wouldn’t even dream of getting close.
Josie finally realized just how OP her Plant Manipulation was.
It didn’t just make her immune to Mutant Flora. It let her blend right in. She could move through them like a ghost, totally invisible.
And the best part? She could eavesdrop. Through Lirio, she could hear every bit of gossip the plants whispered to each other.
She never knew plants could be such drama queens.
“Yo, you hear the news? That pine and the cypress up on the hill are throwing down.”
“Seriously? What for?”
“Word is, this mutant squirrel was going crazy, ripping leaves off a Cypress tree to build a nest. The Cypress tricked the little rat into going over to a Pine tree, and the squirrel ended up jacking its needles, too.”
“LMAO, why the hell did it need so many leaves?”
“Because the temperature is about to tank! Haven’t you heard? The Deep Freeze is coming!”
“Wait, what?! The Deep Freeze? What are we supposed to do? We’re temperate trees!”
“Chill out. We’re mutants. Hot or cold, none of that can kill us. It’s the normal trees that are screwed. When it gets this cold, they’re all just gonna end up as firewood.”
“Good point! Before the Deep Freeze hits, we need to find somewhere to hide, and fast!”
“Hide where?”
“I don’t know! Some deep canyon or a valley?”
“Yeah, let’s go! Let’s do it!”
Josie stood to the side, eavesdropping on the mutant plants as they chirped and argued about the impending disaster.
Wait.
A Deep Freeze?
Josie turned to Lírio. “Ask them. When is it hitting? And how long is it going to last?”
Lirio didn’t waste a second, scuttling off to get the latest tea from the rest of the mutant flora.
A moment later, she came scurrying back, eager to spill the tea. “They’re saying The Deep Freeze hits in a month. No one knows how long it’ll last, but it’s gonna be a long one. Like, really long. Do you need fuel? I know a spot with tons of overgrowth. You should go hack it all down right now!”
“We’ll worry about that later.” Josie started counting down the days on her fingers.
One week. That was all the time they needed to fully clear the highway connecting Fort City to Xavier City.
The backroads and state routes were a different story. Progress there was crawling.
