Chapter 195
If so, they were in for a rude awakening.
Fort City was crawling with just as many monsters, and they weren’t any easier to kill.
Once she finished getting the scoop from Lirio, Josie gathered the rest of the Blue Owl Squad.
“Listen up, I’ve got some intel,” Josie said. “An extreme deep freeze is coming. We’ve got about a month before it hits.”
The members of the Blue Owl Squad traded stunned looks. “A month? That’s it? It’s still ninety degrees out there!”
“She’s right,” Zane said, his brow furrowed. “It’s the apocalypse. The old rules don’t apply anymore. Good thing we stayed ahead of the curve and got the insulation and weatherproofing done. We’re mostly set on firewood, too.”
“I just wonder,” someone muttered, “how this deep freeze is going to hit the undead and the mutants.”
“It’s gotta hit them somehow,” another teammate chimed in. “I don’t care how much they’ve mutated–frozen is frozen. As for the undead, that’s a toss–up. The basic tier will probably freeze solid, but the high–level ones? It might not even slow them down.” Josie nodded. “Exactly. The extreme cold is bad news for your average zombie, but the Alphas won’t care. Their internal systems are completely different from ours now. Heat, cold–it doesn’t matter to them. We can’t afford to let our guard down.”
“If we’ve only got a month before the big freeze, we need to haul ass to Xavier City,” Zane barked. “We need to hoard every scrap of supplies we can find before the temperatures drop. Grab everything, trade for what we need–whatever it takes!”
“I was thinking the same thing,” Josie said, her eyes narrowing. “But have you guys noticed? The people over in Xavier City seem way more desperate to make this happen than we are.”
I was thinking the same thing,” Hudson spoke up. “What if Xavier City is a setup? It feels like a trap.”
Trap or not, we’re going,” Zane grunted. “We’ve put too much work into this to walk away now. I’m not letting all that effort go to waste.”
“He’s right,” Josie said, crossing her arms. “Even if Xavier City is a total death trap, we have to break in. If everything’s normal, we loor the supplies and leave. If it’s not, we definitely need to see what’s going on. Having a ticking time bomb right in our backyard is a disaster waiting to happen.”
“Xavier is way too close to Fort City,” she continued. “If a high–level Alpha evolves over there, we’re the ones with targets on our backs.” “Dealing with that Tier–4 Psychic Undead on our turf is already a nightmare. If a Tier–4 or Tier–5 Alpha pops up next door, humans in both cities are just going to be appetizers.”
Josie sighed, her expression heavy. “The power gap between Rank–3 and Rank 4 is massive. I know it’s a grind, but you guys need to rank up. Fast. Do it before the freeze hits.”
“Once the temperature drops and the Undead and Mutants go into hiding, you won’t have anything to hunt You’ll be stuck without a way to level up.”
“Plus, getting too comfortable makes you soft. You stop fighting, you get rusty. And in this world, being rusty gets you killed.”
“If a fight breaks out and you’re not ready, you’re toast!”
“Sir!” the Blue Owl Squad shouted in unison. “We’ll level Zane tightened his grip, his knuckles turning white.

He had to keep up with Josie. No way in hell was he going to be the dead weight holding her back.
Meanwhile.
Over in Xavier City.
“Where are the people from Fort City?” a voice asked, thick with anxiety. “How much longer until the path is clear
“Give it another week,” someone replied. “Boss… are we sure about this? Luring them here?”
“What other choice do we have? You got a better plan?” the leader snapped. “If we don’t bring in fresh meat, our own population woni last a week. We’re almost tapped out.”
“It’s them or us. My hands are tied.”
“Blame the Tier–4 Alpha that decided to nest here.”
“He made it clear: if we don’t supply him with fresh bodies on schedule, he’s going to eat us into extinction! I’m only baiting Fort Cary because I have to.”
“Hey, we’re all human. I’m sure they’d do the same if they were in our shoes.”
