Cyrus didn’t say a word. His brother, Julian Finch, let out a sharp scoff and rolled his eyes. “You? Take a good look at yourself. You think you’re even in our league?”
Julian Cyrus shot him a look that told him to shut it.
Julian pouted, clearly annoyed, but he didn’t dare talk back to his brother.
Cyrus looked at June and said, “I have a deal with Josie. I won’t touch you Supers until the sun goes down. Once it’s dark, our agreement ends. If you want to keep your head, get out of Xavier City. Now.”
June bit her lip, her eyes burning with resentment. “Why? My potential isn’t any lower than hers. Why can you work with Josie and
not me?”
‘Or is it something else? You’ve got a thing for her, don’t you?”
‘Are you serious? Lady, are you actually brain–dead?” Julian burst out laughing, clutching his sides. “If you like bacon, do you fall in love with the pig? To us Undead, humans are just meat. Do you fall in love with your dinner?”
June’s face went pale, then flushed a nasty shade of red. She looked like she’d been slapped.
Enough. The sun’s setting,” Cyrus said flatly. “If you really want to stay and be my brother’s next snack, be my guest.”
On cue, Julian bared his razor–sharp fangs at her, his eyes glinting with hunger.
June flinched, stumbling back in terror. “Just–just think about my offer! Once the humans lock themselves in those bases, you won’t have anything left to hunt! I can be your inside man! I can help you!”
With that, she spun around and bolted, running like her life depended on it.
Julian watched her disappear into the distance before turning to Cyrus. “You know, bro… she’s a total bitch, but she might actually be onto something.” –
“Not a chance.” Cyrus gave a mocking sneer. “I don’t need to partner with a rat just to get into the Sanctuary. Working with a piece of meat? That’s embarrassing for our kind.”
Julian gave it some serious thought. “Fair point. But if it were Josie, that’d be a different story. Bro, I’m telling you, she’s gorgeous. Man, if she were one of us, she’d make a killer sister–in–law… Hey! Wait! Bro, where are you going?”
“Hunting,” came the reply, followed by a faint, exasperated sigh as Cyrus’s figure vanished into the shadows.
Josie and her crew finally cleared the highway exit. The Terrestrial users immediately stepped up, forming a line. They slammed their palms into the ground, and a massive wall of earth surged upward, sealing off the road.
It wouldn’t stand a chance against a Tier–4 Alpha, but it was enough to hold back the Tier–1 and Tier–2 trash.
Of course, it was only a matter of time.
The path between the two cities was open now. They’d break through sooner or later.
And by that same logic, the undead from Fort City would eventually flood into Xavier.
The people at the Xavier City Base thought they were being clever, throwing others under the bus to save their own skins. They forgor one thing: Fort City had a massive population. That meant a hell of a lot more undead.
In the end, it was anyone’s guess who was really getting the raw end of the deal.
Let’s head bark” Josie waved a hand, summoning the vehicles once more and topping off the gas tanks
The convoy roared to life, heading back toward Fort City in a cloud of dust
Josie walked into the base like a god returning to Earth Everyone crowded around her, treating her like royalty
