M

The snow fell in heavy, silent sheets.

Every step left a deep crater in the drifts.

They all struggled to yank their legs out of the white sludge. The snow was at least two feet deep now.

Half a meter in just two days. This storm was no joke.

And that was only because it started as sleetmelting and freezing into a jagged sheet of ice as it fell. If it had been pure snow, they’d be buried a meter deep by now.

At the summit.

Cyrus stood on the mountain peak, hands clasped behind his back, looking down at the valley below.

From this height, the group of survivors looked like tiny turtles, crawling through the white at a snail’s pace.

Suddenly, his gaze sharpened. His eyes locked onto a familiar figure.

What the hell was she doing here?

If she was part of this, today’s hunt wasn’t going to be easy.

He had to find a way to lure her away.

Cyrus’s eyes flickered as he let out a silent, mental whistle.

Immediately, there was movement from behind the ridge.

A pack of Tier3 Undead surged forward, summoned by his command.

The Tier3s didn’t give a damn about the blizzard. They moved with unnatural speed, appearing on the peak in a flash.

Go. Lead that woman away from the group,Cyrus commanded. Take her far.

Yes, Master. The lead Undead hissed, then lunged down the slope with his pack following close behind.

Cyrus watched them go. The leader was on the verge of hitting Tier4; he should be enough to keep Josie busy for a while.

Fighting in the snow was a bitch. It wasn’t like flat ground.

You could barely keep your footing.

It was freezing, but the snow hadn’t turned to solid ice yet.

Once the ground got rockhard, these Tier3s wouldn’t stand a chance against Josie.

The squad was moving when Josie suddenly signaled a hard stop.

What’s up?someone asked.

Undead!Josie snapped. She reached out, yanking her greatsword straight out of her storage space.

A split second later, she charged, dragging the massive blade through the white.

The Blue Owl Squad didn’t even think. They let out a roar and followed her in.

If Josie used cold steel, they used cold steel.

If Josie used her powers, they unleashed theirs.

They were allin on following her lead.

A minute passed.

Then everyone saw them. A horde was tearing down the mountain peak. There had to be over three hundred of themall Tier3 Undead.

One of the guys couldn’t help but yell, Ms. Quinn, how are they moving so fast? We’re sinking with every step, but they’re fine!* It’s a species gap,Josie replied. A zombie’s leg muscles and bones are three times stronger than a human’s. Tier3 Undead have the jump height and movement speed of a Speedster. They’d leave Usain Bolt in the dust.

Plus, their internal thermostat is way more advanced than the lower tiers. They can automatically adjust their body temp to match whatever’s going on outside.

Humans can’t do that. It’s one area where they’ve got us beat.

I’ve always had this feeling that zombies are just humans who failed to evolve properly. I just don’t have the proof yet.

Here they come! Ready up!
