Chapter 22
CRACK!
The heavy brass buckle snapped violently against Sylvia’s spine.
Sylvia finally broke. She stopped dead in her tracks, panting heavily, and spun around, glaring up at Josie with pure, unadulterated venom.
“You’re right, Sylvia spat, her chest heaving as blood dripped from her cheek. Your mother–Arthur and I drove her to her death! We poisoned her mind, we broke her heart, and we watched her wither away! I was too young to see it then, but she kept you in the dark just to protect you, didn’t she?!”
‘Whatever. Honestly, it’s better she died early!” Sylvia shrieked, a manic, desperate grin on her face. “At least she doesn’t have to deal with this shity world falling apart, and she doesn’t have to look at the psychotic monster her daughter turned into!”
‘Besides, her daughter is right here to settle the score for her.”
Josie dropped the snapped, blood–stained leather belt to the floor. She didn’t even blink at Sylvia’s confession.
She turned calmly, walked to the expansive living room window, and ripped the heavy, velvet curtains straight off the rod. With a few sharp twists of her wrists, she braided the thick, luxurious fabric into a heavy, improvised whip
She lashed it violently across Sylvia’s exposed back.
Now, karma’s calling, Sylvia. And I’m the fcking karma you’ve been running from! Enjoy it!”
Sylviaihad been desperately trying to get a rise out of Josie. She wanted Josie to break down in tears over her mother’s tragic death.
It worked, but entirely the wrong way.
osie was pissed, and every swing of the heavy velvet cord was harder, faster, and infinitely more brutal than the last.
fthis were the old, naive Josic, she would’ve crumbled to the floor in tears. The horrific truth about her mother’s slow, manipulated death would’ve left her broken, hopeless, and paralyzed by grief. It would have destroyed her fragile mind.
But the Josie who came back from the apocalyptic fighting pits was already a hardened, remorseless psycho.
Did she care? Did she cry?
Not a damn bit.
Everyone has to pay for their choices. Even her own mother. She chose a scumbag, and it killed her. Fine. Tears don’t bring dead people back to life.
Sut revenge? Revenge brings peace.
You’re a freak, Josie! Just like your mother! You’re both completely insane!” Arthur roared in pure, helpless desperation, watching the woman he loved et beaten half to death. “I did it! It was all me! I’m the one who seduced your mother for her money! It had absolutely nothing to do with Sylvia! I lanned the whole thing!”
Oh? Does it hurt to see me hit her, Dad?”
osie spun on her heel, lashing the heavy, braided whip directly toward Arthur, catching him brutally across the chest in his wheelchair.
Then let’s see if she cries for you! Scream, Arthur! Scream as loud as you want! The world is ending, the police are dead, and absolutely no one is oming to save you!‘
Go ahead, call June back to help you! Call your precious, perfect daughter! I’ll beat her to a bloody pulp too! We might as well keep the whole fcking amily together Josie laughed, the sound wild, jagged, and completely devoid of sanity.
She was a total, unhinged psycho. And she loved every second of it.
Josie! Stop it! One more move and I swear to God I’m calling the cops!” Sylvia shrieked from the floor, her voice cracking with sheer desperation, lutching her bleeding arms. The undead outside… the military will deal with them any second! The rescue teams are already sweeping the streets! This s still a country of laws!”
Oh? Is that so?” Josie paused, sneering down at the pathetic woman. “You don’t even believe that bullsht yourself, Sylvia. If the world was going back to normal, why’d you send your precious June out to scavenge for supplies with Victor’s thugs?”
Don’t you know taking things from abandoned stores is looting? Last I checked, that’s a federal crime too.”
How… how do you know about that?” Sylvia and Arthur gasped in unison, their eyes wide with shock, temporarily forgetting their pain. ‘Did you… did you awaken an ability too?

Starting today, neither of you is ever leaving this house Oh, wait–I forgot.”
osie tilted her head, her eyes flashing with dark, malicious amusement.
You can’t leave anyway. Because I hacked your fcking legs off! Hahaha!”
Looking at the absolute psycho standing triumphantly before them, the battered, bloodied, and broken Sylvia and Arthur were paralyzed with pure. oul–crushing terror and agonizing regret.

f they had known she was this batsht crazy, they would have smothered her in her sleep years ago.
