Zane’s face darkened “That’s sick. That’s beyond low”
“Where do you think that pregnant woman and those kids from last time came from Josie asked. “They weren ( just survivors. They were Cyrus’s catile
“It’s brutal,” Zane muttered “We used to be at the top of the food chain. Now, humans are just livestock for the Undead.”
“The more I think about it, the more I want to lose at When I catch that bastard. I’m going to kill him.”
Zane spoke up. It’s us or the Undead now A real fight to the death.”
“It always was. Josie replied. There are three sides in this world, but only one gets to survive. Either the Undead and the Mutants eat us into extinction, or we kill them all and take this world back.”
“True,” Zane said. “But that’s on all of humanity, not just you. Stop carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders.”
I’m not stressing. I’m not some saint,” Josie said. “Even if the human race goes extinct, I’ll be the last one standing. But seeing Cyrus
at a higher rank than me? That pisses me off. We need to level up, fast.”
“Whether he’s snatching kids, women, or devouring other Supers–it’s bad news for us either way.”
“Our mission here is to expose him. We need to tear off his mask and stall his progress.”
“Got it.” Zane was already dressed. “What’s the move?”
Josie rested her chin on her hand, thinking for a long beat. “Cyrus knows me too well,” she said. “If I try to play the bait, he’ll spot me in a heartbeat. And you… actually, forget it. I’ve never seen a girl this jacked before.”
Zane stifled a laugh. “Guess we’re both a no–go,” he said.
Even as they spoke, more people were vanishing from the base.
When the two of them stepped out, they saw a crowd losing their minds. People were wailing and screaming everywhere.
The girl at the front desk still remembered Josie. She immediately leaned in, ready to spill the tea. “It’s getting worse,” she whispered. “The kids they’re taking are getting older. Today, it was all girls–fifteen, sixteen years old.”
Josie’s face stayed blank. Fifteen or sixteen. Old enough to have kids.”
The receptionist stopped mid–snack. She slapped her thigh hard. “Shit, I didn’t even think of that! You’re right. They’re targeting the girls. Those traffickers are disgusting. It’s the freaking apocalypse and we’re still dealing with slavers?”
“You really think this is just traffickers?” Josie asked.
“Well, what else?” the girl shot back. “It’s not like the Undead are sneaking into the base to snatch people. Why only take the kids and the girls? Humans and those things… there’s a biological wall there, right? They can’t exactly breed.”
Josie barked out a laugh. “You’re killing me. Reproductive isolation? The Undead might look like us, but they’re a completely different species. It’s like a fat goose–no matter how pretty it is, it’s dinner, not a bride.”
