Doomsday Revenge: Payback Time (Josie) novel Chapter 236

Chapter 236

A month slipped by just like that.

The plantation finished its final harvest. They didn’t plant anything else after that.

The AgriScience Institute had already engineered seeds that could grow in extreme subzero weather. But Josie didn’t think they’d actually need them.

Why?

Because both Cyrus and Lirio had told her the same thing: this Deep Freeze would only last about six months.

Once those six months were up, spring would hit. Temperatures would snap back to normal.

So, seeds that could survive a frozen hellscape? They were basically pointless now.

Still, the research itself was worth something.

So Josie tossed them all into her space anyway.

Who knew? What if another Deep Freeze hit later and lasted for years?

Better safe than sorry, right?

Besides, people needed to stay busy. If they didn’t, they’d go stircrazy in no time.

The old scientists at the Institute then turned their attention to the ice outside.

They discovered something wild. Ice that had been flashfrozen at these extreme temperatures melted into water that tasted incredibly crisp and fresh.

When they ran the tests, the results were perfect. No contaminants, no microbesnothing. It was the best drinking water they’d

ever seen.

The reason?

It was too damn cold!

Any bacteria or viruses that lived in normal or warm temperatures had been completely wiped out. They were dead as doornails.

Bacteria and viruses that can actually survive that kind of deep freeze are rare. Even the ones that do? They drop dead the second they hit room temperature. You wouldn’t even need to boil the waterjust a little sunlight would wipe them out.

That meant this ice was pure gold. It was time to stockpile.

This was going to be the good stuff for drinking and cooking later on.

Once the word got out about how clean the ice was, nobody could sit still.

Everyone bundled up until they looked like polar bears, grabbed pickaxes, shovels, and sledgehammers, and headed out to start

smashing.

You hoard it while it’s frozen. Why wait for it to melt and then try to save it?

Pretty much everyone at Quinshaw Base who was still mobile headed out to hack away at the ice.

Josie was on collection duty.

As fast as they could break it, she sucked the ice into her storage space.

More hands made the work fly.

Plus, those seniors loved a good project. They started coming up with all sorts of hacks and tricks to crack the ice faster. They actually got pretty damn creative with it and gathered a massive haul.

They cleared out every scrap of ice for blocks around their place.

Right in the middle of the action, the phone buzzed. It was the main base.

Josie was surprised to see the caller ID. Getting a call from them was rare.

Wonder what the base wanted this time.

Chief Quinn, the voice on the other end said, sounding extra polite. Word had obviously gotten out that Josie had officially started

her own base.

Sure, it was just a tiny settlement of a hundredodd people, and half of them were senior citizens.

But nobody dared look down on this dinky little outpost.

Because its commander was a straightup beast.
