Zane didn’t skip a beat. “We’re all on the same team. If you need us, we’re there. No questions asked.”
“We might struggle with the supernatural stuff, but traditional warfare? If we can’t handle that, nobody can.”
“Don’t worry. When we were building this place, we made sure to include built–in firing positions and combat zones.”
“And with you acting as a bottomless ammo crate, there’s really nothing to fear.”
“They’re coming from a long way off. There’s no way they’re hauling heavy artillery or much ammo. Their powers are useless right now, too. Taking this place? It’ll be a nightmare for them.”
“We’re locked and loaded. We’ve got the home–turf advantage. No way we lose to them.”
Zane added, “I’ll draw up a battle plan later so we can go over the details.”
Josie nodded. “Works for me. Let’s do it that way.”
“But what about the main base?” Josie asked. “Honestly, I don’t want to touch their mess with a ten–foot pole. But if they fall, we’re next. I don’t want a pack of hungry wolves living right in our backyard.”
“Still, the idea of working for charity… it doesn’t sit right with me.”
“Albert and his son are both snakes. They’re the type to use you and toss you out like trash the second you’re not useful anymore.”
“Even if I save their asses today, they won’t be grateful. They’ll stab us in the back the moment it benefits them.”
“So, what do you guys think?”
“Helping for free? Not a chance,” Zane said. “If they want our help, they pay up. It’s either supplies or Undead Cores. No exceptions.”
“So what if they’re a buffer? Who knows if these little bases will even exist in a few months.”
Zane continued, “The whole system is falling apart. Eventually, it’ll just be everyone for themselves.”
“It’s a dog–eat–dog world. If we don’t look out for ourselves, nobody will.”
‘Demand Undead Cores!” someone shouted.
The others chimed in immediately. “Supplies too! That base is sitting on a massive stockpile. We can never have enough–let’s hoard everything we can get our hands on.”
“And weapons?” Josie asked. “Do we give them any of the mid–tier stuff?\
The Blue Owl Squad answered in a single, sharp chorus: “No. Absolutely not. Giving them real firepower is just asking for a knife in
the back later.”
Josie nodded. “Copy that. We do it your way.”
Zane thought for a moment. “I’ll put a list together for you–specific weapons and ammo counts. Stick to the list and use your best judgment. Bottom line: we don’t get screwed.”
‘And squeeze them hard,” Zane added. “They’re the ones begging. We have all the leverage, so we set the price. This is our chance to bleed them dry. We might not get another shot like this.”
‘Who knows? Once the weather clears up, we might just pack up and move. Things change fast in this world. But as long as we’ve got the resources, we’ll be fine wherever we end up.”
The rest of the squad nodded in agreement. “Exactly. That’s the only way to
play it.”
‘Alright, then it’s a deal,” Josie said, sealing the decision.
Zane was fast. He handed her the combat plan and the ammo supply list almost immediately.

Josie scanned the papers. She didn’t even need to add anything. It was perfect.
And that was that.
Josie called the Base and laid out her terms: weapons in exchange for supplies and Undead Cores.
