It wasn’t hard to imagine the bloodbath Haven City went through when the world first ended. The body count must have been

staggering.

It wasn’t just the initial wave of people turning into the Undead. It was the constant chain reaction-people getting bitten, turning, and then hunting the neighbors they’d just been talking to.

Add the mutants into the mix-deadly plants and beasts-and Haven City’s population didn’t just drop; it tanked.

They wouldn’t have even dreamed of trekking to Fort City if their own home hadn’t become a literal hellscape.

Fort City was different. Thanks to the Lirio, mutant flora were rare, and the ones that did exist stayed in line.

Even the mutant beasts kept their distance.

As for the Undead? Between Josie being a walking tactical nuke and Cyrus-the Alpha himself-keeping them on a leash, the place was eerily peaceful.

That was exactly why the survivors from Haven City had their eyes on this place.

Compared to the nightmare they left behind, Fort City was paradise.

“They’re here,” Zane said. He scanned the perimeter with his binoculars before swapping them for his sniper rifle, locking his sights on the horizon.

Winnie leaned in, whispering, “Damn, they look so cool.”

Josie grinned. “You want to learn? Every single one of them is a crack shot.”

Winnie shook her head so hard her neck probably hurt. “No way, no thanks! I’ll stick to being a regular human. That’s way out of my

league. I’m not built for that kind of grind-I just want to ride your coattails and enjoy the sweet life, Josie!”

She finished talking and immediately started massaging Josie’s shoulders like a total suck-up.

Josie didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Fine. Just don’t come crying to me when you regret it later.”

Winnie shook her head so hard it was a blur. “No way! Zero regrets. As long as I’ve got the Big Boss, I’m happy to just sit back and be a

professional bum for the rest of my life!”

While they were joking around, Zane was already finishing the defensive layout.

Men moved into position outside the base, claiming every high point and sniper perch.

Heavy weapons were rolled out and lined up, ready to be grabbed at a second’s notice.

Others were busy digging holes and burying landmines.

With a quick dusting of snow over the top, the traps completely disappeared.

Once the prep was done, everyone locked into their positions.

Everything was set. Now, they just needed the targets to show up.

They were just waiting for those Haven City refugees to knock on their door.

What about the whole “humans should help each other” thing?

Please.

You might be all about peace and love, but those guys are coming to slit your throat.

“They’re here,” Zane muttered. Through his scope, he locked onto a man in the crowd.

The guy was barking orders, moving his people into a pincer formation to surround Quinshaw Base.
