Chapter 275
“You’re going after the base’s own Supers?” June caught on instantly. “Are you trying to start a riot? Supers aren’t exactly easy targets. You’re playing with fire.”
“That’s exactly why I need you,” Tate said, his face splitting into a grin. “June, I know you can pull this off. You can do the things nobody else has the guts to do.”
June’s mind immediately started running the numbers.
A hundred Supers a month.
Twelve hundred a year.
A year would be more than enough time to reach a level where she could finally crush Josie into the dirt.
It was a hell of a deal.
It was every woman for herself. If you didn’t look out for Number One, the world would chew you up and spit you out.
If she could hunt humans to feed the Alpha, Cyrus, then she sure as hell could drag Supers back to the lab.
Once you toss your soul aside, it’s gone for good. You stop being human.
“Sure, I’m in.” June turned to Tate. “Deal.”
They both shared a dark, knowing smile.
June started spending a lot of time at the lab.
The first time she used an Undead Core to level up, she was actually pretty nervous.
But the second that raw, surging power hit her veins, her fear burned to ash. It felt incredible, and everything else just faded away.
“How’s it feel? Good, right? You’re gonna get addicted to this.” Tate murmured, his lips grazing June’s earlobe. He sounded like the serpent in the Garden, whispering to Eve as he dangled the forbidden fruit. “Everything else is bullshit. Only power-only your own strength-is real.”
June snapped her eyes open. A flash of red light flickered in her gaze for a split second. “You’re right,” she said, her voice hard. “Power is the only thing that’s truly mine. I’m going to be the strongest.”
Tate narrowed his eyes, looking smug.
Meanwhile…
Josie and her group made it back to Quinshaw Base. All the heavy fortifications had already been cleared out, and the place was finally starting to look like its old self again.
The walls weren’t going anywhere, obviously.
If anything, they’d been beefed up even more.
“Ms. Quinn’s back!”
“Ms. Quinn!”
“The Boss Lady is home!”

Shouts and greetings rang out from every direction.
Josie gave them a casual wave. “Everything stay quiet while we were gone?”
“Nothing big happened,” Winnie said, hurrying over to take Josie’s jacket. She handed her a fresh towel to wipe her face and hands. “The Base sent some reps over. They want to keep the trade going, but I told them we’d make the call once you were back. They didn’t push
it.”
“Oh, and one more thing,” Winnie added. The number of people coming in to trade cores has been dropping lately.”
“I heard the Base started outbidding us. They’re buying cores at a premium, so most hunters are just selling to them now. We’re only seeing the ones who need specific supplies that the Base doesn’t stock.”
“Really?” Josie paused. “What’s our current stock of cores?”
“I’ll go get the books!” Winnie bolted toward the gate, dragging back the guy in charge of the exchange along with the ledger. “Compared to last month, our intake is down by nearly a hundred and fifty thousand cores,” the guy in charge of the exchange reported. “I asked around. People are saying the Base is buying them for at least thirty percent more than we are. They’re even doing door-to-door pickups.”
“They also said a huge wave of High-rank Supers just… appeared out of nowhere. It’s like they leveled up overnight. Nobody saw them out hunting undead; they just stayed inside the Base and suddenly, boom-they’re top-tier.”
