Chapter 281
She needed a spark-something to push her over the edge.
Maybe this trip south was exactly what she needed. With the right opening, she could finally smash through her bottleneck and level up
in one go.
Zane immediately huddled with the Blue Owl Squad. Every single one of them wanted in on the mission, but taking the whole team just wasn’t realistic.
They stuck to the same strategy as last time: if you went out on the last run, you stayed behind to guard the base.
If you stayed back last time, you were on the roster for the trip south.
Zane wanted to go too.
But this time, Josie shut him down.
Holding down the fort at Quinshaw Base was a massive responsibility, and she couldn’t leave it to just anyone.
Besides Josie, Zane was the only one there who actually knew how to lead.
Zane knew she was right.
He hated the idea of being away from Josie, but he gave a sharp nod anyway. “Don’t worry. As long as I’ve got a pulse, I won’t let anyone or anything-human, undead, or mutated-breach Quinshaw Base.”
Josie patted Zane on the shoulder. “Don’t be a martyr,” she said. “If you can’t hold the line, don’t. Fall back to the second perimeter, hit the tunnels, and get to the shelters we prepped.”
“We built this place brick by brick, but people are more important than property.”
“As long as we’re alive, we can always start over.”
“Got it,” Zane replied, a grin tugging at the corners of his eyes.
Once the deployment was set, Josie turned to Winnie. “What about you? What’s your plan?”
Winnie gathered her courage. “Josie, I’m not a fighter, and I don’t want to be a drag on you. I’ll stay at the base and help look after the elderly.”
“If we have to evacuate, I’ll help cover the rear.”
“I know how much you value those scientists.”
“So, I’ll make sure they’re taken care of. I’ll keep them safe!”
Josie smiled and ruffled Winnie’s hair. “You don’t have to be such a saint. Just take care of yourself while I’m gone.”
“I will!” Winnie nodded hard.
That night, the old Director of the Agri-Science Institute came to see Josie alone.
“Chief Quinn, I have something to tell you. In private.” “The old man adjusted his glasses, looking like he was struggling to find the right
words.
Josie pointed to the sofa. “Have a seat. Talk to me.”

“Wait,” the old director of the Agri-Science Institute spoke up. “You’re heading to Newport City. That’s a long trek, and I know the road is a death trap. But… I have a favor to ask. A big one.”
“My son was in Newport when the world ended. I haven’t heard from him since.”
“Chief Quinn, is there any way you could… look for him?”
“I know. Finding one guy in a city that size is like looking for a needle in a haystack.”
“But what if?”
“What if you actually run into him?”
Josie nodded. She got it. “Look, I hear you. But I’ll be straight with you-it depends on the situation. If we have time to spare, I’ll look for him. If not? We’re pulling out immediately. The warheads and the fuel are the priority. We have to beat Cyrus to the punch. There’s no way in hell I’m letting him get his hands on that kind of power again.”
“I know! I understand completely!” Director Lane said, nodding quickly.
“Alright. What’s his name? Where was he last? What does he do?” Josie asked.
“His name is Sean Voss. He’s the lead on the Nuclear Fusion Task Force. He specializes in the practical application of controlled fusion.* Josie, who had been looking bored just a second ago, suddenly snapped to attention. She sat bolt upright, her face pale. “What did you say his name was?”
Sean Voss.
In her past life, that name was legendary.
Because he was the Undead King’s right-hand man. His most trusted lieutenant.
