Chapter 280

“He left it all in code, but I happen to know the cipher,” Zane said. “I crunched the data he left behind and tracked the location. I’m at least eighty percent sure.”

“Newport City has a military base, right?” Josie asked. She trusted Zane’s gut. If he said he found it, he found it.

“Yeah,” Zane said. “That base is a ghost. It’s completely off the grid-most people don’t even know it exists. We’re talking nukes, plus a whole stash of top-secret experimental gear.”

“Perfect. No time to waste. Let’s gear up and head for Newport City,” Josie said, her voice sharp and decisive. “Move it. Let’s get back and draw up a plan.”

“Done,” Zane said. He didn’t waste any breath on small talk. He just asked if she needed to crash for a bit.

He didn’t really need to ask.

It was a respect thing. Pure trust.

They headed back to Quinshaw Base. Josie hit the shower first and swapped into some fresh clothes.

Standard procedure: food first. They’d hold the meeting once everyone was fueled up.

Winnie brought out the drinks like she always did, then stepped back to give them space.

Josie didn’t mince words. “Cyrus found a shortcut to level up fast,” she said. “He’s not going to walk away from that path now.”

“We can’t just sit back and let him keep blowing nukes to fuel his growth.”

“Forget the ecosystem for a second. Think about the radiation. It’s going to spawn high-rank undead and mutants like crazy. We can’t just sit back and let that happen.”

“If we didn’t know where the warheads were, fine. But we do. And that means I’m taking every last one of them.”

“I don’t trust anyone else. I only trust myself. Those nukes need to be in my hands and nowhere else.”

“I’m heading to Newport City to seize the warheads and the raw materials. I’m putting a team together.”

“We can’t leave Quinshaw Base empty. Someone needs to stay and hold down the fort.”

“So, let’s talk. Who’s coming with me to Newport, and who’s staying behind?”

“Don’t go thinking that heading to Newport City is the only way to get killed. And don’t think staying here makes you safe. It doesn’t.” Josie paused for a second, then continued. “Once we move out, the base is going to be a magnet. The undead and mutants will treat this place like a prize. They’ll hit us again and again. We have to be careful about who stays behind. Whoever it is, they have to hold this place until we get back. No excuses.”

“If it wasn’t for the crew from the Agri-Science Institute, losing this place wouldn’t be the end of the world. We’d just pack up and find a new spot to start over.”

“But those old folks? They can’t outrun a pack of zombies or a mutant.”

“Since I took them in, they’re one of us. I don’t abandon my people.”

“So, Quinshaw Base has to hold. We can’t afford a single slip-up.”

“As for the team coming with me, it’s going to be a meat grinder.”

“We have zero intel on the south. We don’t know what the situation is or how much the undead have evolved down there.”
