Chapter 305
Josie liked the guy. He was sharp and knew exactly how the game was played.
She leaned closer, keeping her voice barely audible. “I want to know if anyone has been asking about the research lab or the military base in Newport City lately. I need to know who’s asking and what they’ve found. I want hard facts, not some vague bullshit.”
“Once you have something, have them find me. The yout will be just as fat as the last one.”
The registrar’s eyes lit up instantly. She nodded frantically, her voice thick with excitement. “I’m on it. Consider it done. Don’t you worry about a thing, I’ll handle this personally!”
“Alright, pick us a spot to crash for now.” Josie scanned the map for a moment before tapping her finger on a specific building. “This one.”
The registrar glanced at the spot and frowned. “Are you sure? I can find you something better. That place is way out of the edge, right against the outer wall. It’s the first place the Undead hit when they swarm.”
‘It’s fine. I’m not worried,” Josie said with a faint, calm smile. “I just prefer the peace and quiet.”
“Suit yourself.” The registrar pulled the map back and quickly hammered out the paperwork. “That’ll be one pound of grain per day. Coarse grain is fine.”
She was looking out for Josie, a small professional courtesy because of the chocolate. She didn’t want the girl to get ripped off or end up as zombie bait.
Josie didn’t brush off the gesture. She appreciated the heads-up.
She pulled out ten and a half pounds of dried sweet potato jerky and slid it across the counter. “Keep the extra. It’s a tip for the help.”
The registrar’s eyes nearly popped out of her head.
She hadn’t expected a simple warning to pay off this big.
Half a pound of sweet potato jerky was a fortune. If she took that home and stretched it out with some scrap greens and stalks, she could eat like a queen for a week!
She snatched the dried sweet potatoes up, her face instantly lighting up with a massive grin. She was all about service now. “I’ll have someone show you he way immediately! And I’ll make sure they give the place a deep dean for you.”
Josie gave a small, polite nod. “Appreciate it.”
They headed to their new spot.
The team did a full sweep of the house. They checked for bugs, cameras, and any hidden listening devices. They scouted the perimeter, checking for lind spots or anything that could turn into a security risk.
Only after they were 100% sure the place was clean did they lock the front door tight.
osie didn’t even look at the crappy furniture that came with the room. Instead, she reached into her storage space and pulled out her own familiar gear. She handed out bedding and tactical supplies to everyone, one by one.
‘What’s the move, Ms. Quinn?” All eyes turned to Josie.
Josie crossed her arms, thinking it through. “I’m betting Cyrus beat us here. And knowing him, he definitely knows we’ve arrived.”
‘He’s going to be tracking us. Everywhere we go, he’ll be watching.”
‘So, we’re splitting into three teams. We’ll keep him busy with a bunch of fake leads to throw him off the scent.”
“While he’s distracted, I’ll slip under the radar. I’m going to join one of the local scavenger squads under the guise of looking for supplies. That’s how get close to the research labs and the military zone”
Your job is to keep his eyes on you Pull some stunts, make some noise-do whatever it takes to make him think the nukes are hidden night where you are.’
“Then, before he even realizes what’s hit him, I’ll swoop in and swipe the whole lot Everything goes into my storage.”
Josie stammed her fist onto the table. This time, failure isn’t an option. We win, or we’re done.”
