Chapter 304

The clerk didn’t even bother to look up. “Register first. Fee is ten pounds of grain or equivalent supplies. What are you paying with?”

“Grain.” Josie reached into her storage and pulled out a five-kilogram bag of rice. She slammed onto the counter.

The next second.

The rowdy, chaotic hall went stone-cold silent.

Every eye in the place snapped to Josie.

Josie knew exactly why she was the center of attention.

The bag of rice she’d pulled out was premium grade.

Before the world went to hell, it wouldn’t have been a big deal. But now, especially in a resource-starved dump like Newport City Base, it stuck out like 1 sore thumb.

When people here talked about “food,” they meant coarse grain, scrap mix, or even rice husks. Not this.

Refined white rice like this? Norms couldn’t even dream of eating something so pure.

To put it simply, ten pounds of premium rice was a goldmine. They could trade it for a hundred pounds of scrap grain-maybe more. It meant staying full. It meant surviving.

The crowd snapped. A second later, they were swarming Josie like starving wolves, screaming over each other to get her attention. “Give me the job! I can do it!”

‘Me! Pick me! I’m the best tracker in the city! I’ve found dozens of lost families already!”

I know everybody in this base! My network is the biggest!”

My cousin runs the ID registry! I can get you any records you need!”

osie smirked. This was exactly the reaction she wanted.

She raised a hand, signaling for silence.

osie was a new face, but she had an aura. A heavy, silent authority that commanded the room. The rowdy crowd went dead silent the second she

ooked at them.

She held up a photo of Sean for everyone to see. “I’m looking for this man. Sean. He used to be a researcher at the Newport City Research Institute.” Whether you find the man or just a solid lead on his location, come find me.”

I don’t care if you work alone or together.”

Bring him to me in person, and I’ll give you twenty pounds of rice.”

Give me a lead that actually helps me find him, and you get ten pounds.”

If you find him as a group, I’ll drop fifty pounds of rice for you to split among yourselves.”

The place went nuts.

Fifty pounds of white rice!

Holy shit.

If they traded that for scrap grain or flour, they could eat for a whole year!

In a world where everyone was starving, this mission was a total cakewalk.

All they had to do was find a guy?

Just comb through the base and check faces.

Zero risk No danger

This was the kind of payday people would kill for.

Every person there burned the man’s face into their memory and bolted. They were practically tripping over each other to start the hunt.

Seeing Josie throw around that kind of wealth, the registration clerk’s attitude did a total 180. He was suddenly all smiles and energy.

‘Hey, miss, you guys have a place to crash yet?” the clerk asked, his voice dripping with newfound respect. “We’ve got permanent spots and temporary rentals. A thousand pounds of food buys you a place for good. Or, you can rent out a large suite for just a pound a day-plenty of room for your whole

:rew.”

Temporary’s fine. We’re just here to find someone, then we’re out,” Josie said. She pulled out a chocolate bar and slicked it across the counter, hidden ‘rom prying eyes. She leaned in, her voice a low murmur. “I need to put out a private request. Can you handle that?”

The clerk didn’t blink. Her hand moved like lightning, swiping the candy bar and tucking it away before anyone noticed. “Don’t worry,” he whispered ›ack. “I won’t put this one on the big screen. I’ll hand-pick a solid, reliable crew to handle a secret job like this.”
