Chapter 307
Word on the street was that when The Sanctuary pulled out, they took the entire arsenal with them.
But everyone swore there were no nukes. Not a single trace of radioactive material. Nothing.
Just the standard-issue stuff.
Plenty of heavy weaponry, sure. But the big red buttons? Zero.
So, where the hell were they?
Was the intel even legit?
No, it had to be.
osie wouldn’t have hauled ass all the way to Newport City for nothing. She wouldn’t make a move this big without a damn good reason.
She was just like him-she didn’t play unless there was a payday waiting. She wasn’t here for the scenery.
There had to be nukes here. Nukes and raw materials.
t was just a race now. Whoever got to them first, won.
Meanwhile, Josie led her team out of The Sanctuary, heading toward their target at a steady pace.
Newport City was further south. Now that The Freeze was over, the humidity was through the roof, and the greenery was exploding.
lowers were everywhere, a riot of colors. It actually looked decent for once.
But these weren’t your average garden flowers. They looked wild, hungry-like they were trying to swallow the world.
They hadn’t mutated yet, but they were already staking their claim, fighting humans for every inch of ground.
t was a war between the species. A total toss-up. No one knew who’d come out on top in the end.
osie walked in silence, listening to the others chatter. She had no intention of jumping into the conversation.
Sometimes, eavesdropping on the local gossip was enough to keep things interesting.
Hey, did you guys hear? One of the guys down in the boiler room was so into his book he didn’t even notice his pants were on fire! By the time omeone spotted him, his jeans had burned down into boxers! Hahaha!”
For real?” someone chimed in. “Dude sounds like a total space cadet.”
Tell me about it. A total nerd. I heard he used to be a professor back in the day. No idea what he taught, though.”
Who cares what he taught? Schools are a thing of the past. Nobody’s hitting the books anymore.”
Too true. When just staying alive is this hard, who’s got the energy to study?”
Still, once we settle down, we’re gonna have to start a school or something. Unless we want the kids to grow up totally fliterate.”
Kids? What kids? Not a single kid under three in this base survived. And nobody’s exactly rushing to get pregnant now. There are no kids left.”
Fair point.”
But honestly, not many eggheads in this base are willing to slave away in a boiler room. Most of them try to get into the Science Institute. At least the pay is steady there, and you don’t have to bust your ass.”
Yeah, that professor is a total weirdo. He never talks to anyone-just a lone wolf. I haven’t seen him with any friends or family either
Right Totally bizarre.”
Josie asked casually, “So, what’s this freak’s name?”
‘No clue. I think they said it’s Chase. Everyone just calls him Professor Chase.”
Josie shook her head, feeling let down “Professor Chase? Do any of you know someone with the last name Voss?”

Nope, never heard of him. Voss? That’s a pretty rare name, right? I’d definitely remember if I’d heard it.”
“Yeah, for sure. Never heard of him.”
Josie didn’t even think to connect this weirdo they were gossiping about to the man she was looking for.
It never crossed her mind that she’d actually find her target on the very first day.
But because Sean was staying off the grid and using an alias, Josie let him slip right through her fingers.
