Doomsday Revenge: Payback Time (Josie) novel Chapter 350

Chapter 350.

He might not know much else, but he certainly knew what his parents did for a living.

The Agri-Science Institute was originally located elsewhere, but it had been temporarily moved to Fort City just before the apocalypse began.

His parents had gone with it.

And now, people were saying Josie had taken in the entire institute.

It was entirely possible.

Sean knew better than anyone how much his old man loved his work. To his father, the plants at the institute were his life.

In this environment, who could protect those things?

Aside from Josie, with her limitless spatial storage, his father wouldn’t have had any other choice.

If his father had entrusted Josie to find him, then she was someone he could actually trust.

But he had to confirm it for himself.

Josie hadn’t intended to go back out to set up a stall, but Hudson Knox’s words had reminded her of something.

Sean was likely watching her from some dark corner right now.

If she didn’t show herself, how could she demonstrate her strength and sincerity? How could she convince him to follow her?

So, she had to keep the market going.

Josie let out a groan of frustration before resigning herself to her fate and heading back out to sell more goods.

The citizens of the base were ecstatic!

Because this time, Josie had brought out a new item they hadn’t seen in a long time-cigarettes.

In all honesty, people who didn’t smoke had no idea why they were so special.

But for smokers, being without them was like a soul-crushing craving. I was pure agony. Quitting was an incredibly difficult ordeal.

And in the apocalypse, where were you going to find a cigarette factory?

Where would you find stock?

Even if there were some left, they had likely rotted away during the period of extreme cold. There was nothing left to smoke. Consequently, the price of cigarettes was currently astronomical. Sometimes there was a price, but no supply at all.

Those who still had cigarettes hid them away like treasure, terrified of letting anyone \find out.

When Josie had given out a single cigarette as a tip earlier, it had been, enough for that person to trade for a week’s worth of food.

It was that ridiculous.

So, when Josie suddenly put a pile of cigarettes on the shelves, the smokers swarmed the area like a plague of locusts.

Sean was also a heavy smoker.

It was a common habit among researchers. They needed cigarettes to stay alert and focused.

Hearing that Josie was selling them, he couldn’t help himself and joined the crowd.

The line was long, but it moved quickly.

Cigarettes were truly expensive.

Compared to grain and daily necessities, these were a luxury item. One Tier-3 Undead Core could only be traded for a single, very common cigarette. If you wanted a high-end brand, you had to use a Tier-5 Undead Core.

Right now, there were very few Tier-5 Cores in all of Newport City, so most people could only settle for the common ones.

But even so, the long-term smokers dipped into their stashes without hesitation. They were willing to spend. Even if they couldn’t bear to smoke them, just getting a whiff was enough.

Everyone dug out their secret stashes of Cores to buy at least a couple.

Soon, it was Sean’s turn.

Fidgeting nervously, Sean pulled a handful of Cores from his pocket and placed them on the table. “How many can I get for these?”

One common cigarette,” Josie answered.

Then… if I have information on the person you’re looking for, how many cigarettes is that worth?” Seart asked.

osie raised an eyebrow and looked at him. “Are you sure your information is real? What if you’re trying to trick me?”

What if I add this?” Sean said, placing a photo of himself as a young man on the table.

The moment Josie saw the photo, she stood up abruptly.

Lately, countless people had claimed to have information on Sean Voss’s whereabouts.

Josie Quinn had merely given them some travel money to be on their way. None of them had provided a single shred of solid evidence.

But the man standing before her now had not only produced a photo but spoke with absolute certainty.

He had to actually know where Sean was!

Josie couldn’t hold back her urgency.

This way, please,” Josie said, standing up quickly. “Let’s talk inside!”

“Fine,” Sean Voss replied. He tucked the photo away and shoved his hands into his sleeves, following her in.

His posture and the way he walked didn’t look like a researcher at all; he looked exactly like any other common laborer.

Josie led Sean into a private room. She manifested two glasses of water and set them down. “How did you get that photo?”

T’d like to ask you a few questions before I answer yours, if that’s okay?” Sean countered.

Fine. Ask away,” Josie said, leaning back. “I’ll tell you what I can, but there are some things I have to keep secret. I hope you understand.”

Sean nodded. “I understand.”

‘So, who exactly are you people? Why are you looking for him? Is this a personal request, or is an organization looking for him? Can you tell me who the person behind this request is?”

That’s quite a few questions,” Josie replied. “I’ll answer them one by one.”

First, I am Josie Quinn. I’m from Quinshaw Base in Fort City. As for who we are… that’s a hard one to answer. I can only say that we’re normal people, just like you.”

It’s the apocalypse. Nations don’t really exist anymore. Everyone is just fighting their own battles.”

It’s not just Newport City. It’s the same everywhere else.”
