Chapter 374
Chapter 374.
Josie raised an eyebrow. “Human experiments? That’s boid. To do that kind of research without proper containment… they really were idiots “Not only that!” another added. “The base was split into several factions, we found several large buildings with signs indicating a family style management system. A perfectly good base was turned into a joint venture between a few big families.”
“When it comes to profit, they would definitely deflect responsibility and bicker with each other. That meant the base wasn’t unified. It’s no wonder they ended up like this!”
“We must take this as a warning,” Josie said. “We can’t let this happen at Quinshaw Base!”
“Right!” the others nodded in agreement. “We’ll follow your lead, Ms. Quinn!”
“Since there’s nothing else here, let’s not waste any more time. Let’s go!” After collecting most of the useful materials, jesie prepared to lead them back The sun shone on the wall where Josie had pried out the Tier-7 Undead Core. The spot where the hole should have been had somehow become smooth and whole again, as if no core had ever been embedded there.
Josie led her people back to the main group.
“There’s nothing left in this city. Let’s move out!” Josie announced.
“Are there really no survivors?” Hudson Knox asked, shocked.
Josie nodded. “Even if there were survivors, how long do you think they could last? Without food or land to farm, how long can a person hold out? Even if there are supplies out there, would they dare go out to find them?”
A heavy silence fell over the group.
Sean Voss spoke up then. “She’s right. A Norm wouldn’t survive a single day. In Newport City, the citizens only go out under the protection of Supers Otherwise, they never come back. If the Undead don’t get them, the mutant flora and fauna will.”
“It really makes you think,” Hudson said. “How many humans will be left in the end?”
“Likely not many,” Josie answered bluntly. “If humanity can maintain a population of ten million across the globe, I’d call that a victory.”
That was an optimistic estimate. A more pessimistic one would be only one or two million, or even fewer. That would truly be the final spark of humanity. Once that spark was extinguished, the planet would fall into a long silence, and plants and animals would once again become the masters of the world.
Everyone was thinking the same thing, and their moods grew somber.
“Alright, stop being so depressed. We haven’t reached that point yet!” Josie said with a smile. “Aren’t we all still doing fine? I’ll do my best to level up and protect you all!”
The others managed to smile back, offering their own promises. “We’ll level up as fast as we can, too. We won’t drag you down, Ms. Quin!”
“Right! We’ll keep up with you!”
