Chapter 395.
Josie Quinn nodded. “It’s not easy, taking care of so many children by yourself. So, why are you here? Is it just you? Where are the others?”
At the question, Kira Sinclair’s expression darkened.
“To be honest, I mistook you for raiders,” Kira said with a sour look on her face. “Finding food is nearly impossible now. There are many people who don’t want to risk their lives scavenging. They’d rath take the shortcut.”
“You mean the people who escaped the base with you?” Josie asked.
“Yes.” Kira nodded. “There’s no shortage of Supers among them. But there’s only so much food. If one person eats a mouthful, someone else goes hungry.”
“So they started eating people,” Kira said, struggling to keep from gagging. “I saw it with my own eyes.. a child who wandered off was caught and thrown into a pot…”
As she spoke, Kira turned away and retched violently.
The memory clearly haunted her.
Josie’s face remained an emotionless mask. She had already guessed as much.
After the mutant flora and fauna awakened, they became far more formidable. For an average person, finding food was no longer a simple task. They could search for an entire day and find nothing edible. After all, a plant that looked harmless could transform at any second into a little devil ready to harvest a human life.
When people couldn’t find food, they turned on their own kind.
Human depravity-it was a constant. No one seemed immune to it.
This only proved how capable Kira really was. Starting with nothing, she had managed to keep a group of children alive in this brutal apocalypse. It was clear her Cryo Superpower had been honed to perfection.
Moreover, Kira was a main offensive combatant with a solid moral compass. Taking care of a group of children she wasn’t even related to, and keeping them safe for this long, spoke volumes about her character and her strength.
Josie’s admiration for her grew even more apparent.
“How many people are left in Quartz City?” Josie asked. “Do you have an estimate?”
Kira shook her head. “I have no idea. Quartz City is huge. People could be hiding in any corner, or they could be devoured by the Undead and Murams at any moment. It’s hard to say exactly how many are left.”
