Chapter 40
“Just the four of you?” Josie smirked. “You’re really underestimating me.”

“What? Four of us aren’t enough to satisfy you?” one of them sneered. “You’re a cute little thing. The big boys like what they see.”
Take good care of us tonight, and I’ll make sure you get a drink! Stick with me, and as long as I’ve got food, you’ll have a plate too.”
Josie sighed, listening to their mindless trash talk.
She really hadn’t planned on killing anyone today.
But if they were this desperate to die, she might as well help them out.
A small blade began to take shape in her palm.
Just as she was about to move, someone came sprinting over from a distance. He shouted to the four men, The Boss is calling a meeting! We’re planning a supply run. Get over there now–you know how pissed he gets when people are late.”
The four men hesitated, glancing back at Josie. They figured they could just come back for her later. She wasn’t going anywhere anyway. The main doors were locked tight; she was trapped.
“Don’t go anywhere, sweetheart. We’ll be back to take care of you in a bit.” The four men finally walked off, looking back like they were missing out on a
prize.
The messenger waited until they were out of sight, then leaned in and hissed at Josie, They’ve taken over this whole place. They won’t let you go. Get out while they’re busy. Run!”
Without waiting for a reply, the person turned and bolted.
Their hair was a jagged mess, their face was caked in grime, and their clothes were baggy and worn out. But Josie saw right through it. It was a girl.
Interesting.
The apocalypse had just started, so people still had a sense of mercy. A few more months, and no one would give a damn about a stranger.
But Josie didn’t plan on taking the advice.
This mall was a good spot. Perfect for a solid night’s sleep.
If some idiots came looking for trouble? She’d just kill them.
osie cleared out the kids‘ clothing store, getting it organized and ready.
She locked the door and pulled a thick comforter from her space. She spread it out over a display table. This was her bed tonight.
Her stomach growled.
Josie reached into her space and pulled out some of the takeout her stepmother had hoarded.
She pulled out a feast from her space: steaming hot Nashville hot chicken, extra spicy Buffalo wings, a large iced latte, and a fresh fruit cup.
It hit the spot. Pure bliss.
Once she was full, she tossed the trash back into her space. She leaned back, hands behind her head, and drifted off to sleep.
Downstairs, though…
CRACK! A heavy hand slammed across the messenger’s face. “You lying to me? Since when did the Boss call a meeting?”
The guy stumbled back, mumbling through a split lip. “Sorry… I must’ve heard wrong!”
Fucking waste of time! Come on, let’s go have some fun with that bitch.” The group headed back to the northwest corner of the second floor, swearing the whole way.
As soon as they got there, they saw Josie inside the kids‘ clothing store, fast asleep.
“Damn, she’s ballsy. I like that.” One of the men leered, his mouth full of filth as he shoved the door open. “Even got the bed ready? Don’t worry, baby. Daddy’s gonna take real good care of you.”
He didn’t wait–he lunged straight for Josie.
But he barely made it a few steps before his legs gave out. He slammed onto the floor, crashing to his knees.
