Doomsday Revenge: Payback Time (Josie) novel Chapter 39

Josie walked out of the luxury complex and didn’t look back

The moment she was gone, Zane stepped out of the shadows. He stood there, his eyes locked on her retreating figure, his brow furrowed in deep thought.

He couldn’t wrap his head around it.

According to the rapid intel his guys had just pulled, Josie Quinn was your typical good girlfrom a wealthy, sheltered background. She had spent her entire life shielded by her mother’s money. A pampered socialite who took classical piano and painting.

She had never stepped foot in a dojo or even broken a sweat in a combat class.

Yet, it was as if she had flipped a switch overnight and turned into a worldclass apex predator.

They had only traded three moves, but that was more than enough for him to see it. Her strikes were cold, precise, and lethal. That kind of merciless muscle memory took at least ten years of bloodsoaked training to build.

But she was only twenty. How the hell could she have ten years of lethal combat experience?

None of it made sense. But she was definitely Josie. The ID, the backgroundeverything checked out.

Boss!a soldier called out, jogging up behind Zane. Orders are in from Command. We’re moving to clear the next block of Undead.

Got it.Zane took one last look at the empty street where Josie had vanished, then hopped into the armored transport, heading for the next bloody mission point.

Meanwhile, Josie found a secluded alley, pulled a car out of her spatial vault, and drove toward the nearest gas station.

She didn’t even make it to the pumps before she saw the line. It was backed up for miles.

Total, unadulterated gridlock.

People were frantic. Word had finally gotten out that the military couldn’t hold the perimeter. The panicked masses were desperate to get out of the

city.

Fort City was just too crowded. In a metropolis of tens of millions, once the Undead fully evolved, everyone trapped inside would be a sitting duck. Right now, the desolate countryside was the only safe place to be.

Everyone was trying to do the exact same thing: fuel up and run.

But there was a fatal problem. The station only had so much gas, and the supply tankers couldn’t get through the apocalyptic gridlock to refill them.

The underground tanks were running bonedry.

Sorry, folks! We’re bone dry!The exhausted gas station owner shouted through a megaphone, standing behind a barricade. Move on! The military requisitioned all my tankers Don’t waste your time waiting here!

Come on, man! Give us a break!a desperate father pleaded, slamming his hands on his steering wheel. My kids are in the car! We have to get out of he city today! How are we supposed to make it without gas?!

The owner just shook his head, turning his back on the screaming crowd. It’s not that I won’t help, it’s that I literally have nothing left. Find another way. This station is closing down.
