Chapter 400.
Just then, the oldest boy in the group crawled out from the underground shelter. “Sister”
“Oh, why are you out here?” Kira sqapped out of her thoughts. Is the food ready?”
“They’re working on it,” the boy said, biting his lip. “Are you worried about what that woman said?
“You heard everything? What do you think? Kira asked,
“Sister, you should say yes,” the boy urged. “If we stay here, it’s a dead end. You’ve done more than enough for us. Even if you left us and went on your own, none of us would complain!”
“Don’t talk like that! I’m not abandoning you!” Kira snapped. “I promised the Director I’d take care of your
“But you have taken care of us,” the boy argued. “It’s our fault we can’t do more to help you. If you have a chance at a better future…”
“Shut up! I don’t want to hear it!” Kira’s voice was sharp with irritation.
The boy smiled sadly. “Besides, they said they’d take all of us! We won’t have to separate! And Slates, you’ve noticed too-it’s getting harder to find food Most of the edible plants are gone. We can handle it, but Flora and Meadow are only eight. They can’t keep eating grass every day. Their bodies won’t last. Since that team has food and is willing to take us, why are we being picky?”
Kira frowned. “Aren’t you afraid it’s a trap? If we join them, we might never get out.”
“Sister, if we don’t join them, we’ll eventually be forced onto someone else’s team,” the boy replied. “I know the other groups have been trying to recru you. When our food runs out, you’ll have to say yes to them. I don’t trust those people, but I’d trust this group. They’ve protected all those elders and didn’t leave them behind. They have cars. They have food. At the very least, they won’t eat people. The other groups? I’m not so sure. I’m terrified that when things get worse, they’ll wait until you aren’t looking and grab Flora or Meadow for the pot!”
The boy’s words finally broke through Kira’s hesitation.
