Chapter 409.
The room went dead silent.
Albert Jansen waved his hand, dismissing everyone who didn’t belong. Only his inner circle remained in the banquet hall-men he trusted.
If Albert were to leave, these were the people he would take with him. Now that the room was cleared, the conversation turned blunt.
With so many people in the base, we definitely can’t take everyone. The supplies needed for the journey alone would be astronomical,” someone spoke up. “More importantly, a group that size moves like a snail. We wouldn’t make it ten miles in a day. We have to make a choice. We have to cut the dead weight.”
“I agree,” another man chimed in. “We can only take a portion of the population. The rest? They’ll just have to figure it out on their own.”
Then who stays and who goes?”
“We’ll need a meeting to hammer out the selection criteria.”
“And where exactly are we going?”
One of the advisors leaned forward. “Since Josie Quinn knew about the earthquake and evacuated so early, she clearly knows where it’s safe. We should just follow her. Besides, she’s already cleared the route of Undead and Mutants. Following her trail is the safest bet by far.”
It was exactly as Josie had predicted. These people weren’t idiots.
Albert, listened to the discussion in silence, his heart heavy with a bitter regret. He had just managed to get rid of Josie. He hadn’t even enjoyed his total control of Fort City for more than a few days, and now he was being forced to go crawling after her?
He couldn’t stand it.
But his ego didn’t matter in the face of death. The man was right any other route was a gamble filled with unknown traps and evolved monsters. Following Josie meant letting her do the heavy lifting while they reaped the benefits. It was the only logical choice.
“Go back and draw up a plan,” Albert ordered. “And make it fast! Do you understand?”
Time was their enemy. An earthquake wasn’t like an Undead horde; you couldn’t always see it coming. It could trigger at any second.
The monitoring officer had mentioned that this was likely caused by a massive underwater volcanic eruption. No one knew when the final explosion would happen. They had to move before Josie got too far ahead.
They were actually grateful now that Josie had taken those old fogies from the Agri-Science Institute. If it were just Josie and the Blue Owl Squad, they’d be hundreds of miles away by tomorrow. But with the slow-moving elderly professors in tow, Josie’s convoy wouldn’t be able to maintain a high speed.
The base still had a chance to catch up.
Part of them hoped Josie would run into trouble-just enough to slow her down even more, but not enough to block the path for them.
The news of the impending earthquake reached June Quinn’s ears almost immediately.
It was bound to happen. As a Tier 6 Aquatic Super and Tate Jansen’s lover, she was part of the elite. When Tate prepared to follow his father, he was naturally taking his core team with him.
June was part of that core.
“What did you just say?” June froze, her entire body tensing as the realization hit her like a physical blow.
Suddenly, everything made sense. She finally understood why Josie had swallowed such a massive loss without a left Font City so decisively!
