Cyrus Finch watched as Josie Quinn bristled like a threatened cat. His gaze shifted back to her. “I’ve helped you so much. Is asking for one person really that much of an overstep?”

“Yes! Way too much! Beyond too much!” Josie snapped back fiercely. “Don’t even dream of poaching a single person from my side! It’s never going to happen!”

Cyrus had originally only made the comment in passing, but Josie’s explosive reaction piqued his interest.

“Is there something special about this man?” Cyrus’s mind was lightning fast. “Is he one of the ones you brought back from Newport City? Does he have some kind of secret?”

Before Josie could react, Zane Shaw stepped in with a commanding presence. “Cyrus Finch, you and I are different species,” Zane said coldly. “To you, we are nothing more than food. Do you really think we would hand over one of our own to a species that preys on us? Whether they are elderly, children, or in their prime, we will never abandon one of our own. Anyone who joins us at Quinshaw Base is one of us. Unless it is a natural law we cannot fight–the cycle of birth, aging, illness, and death–we will protect every single person to the bitter end!”

Sean Voss pushed up his glasses and added calmly, “I’m nothing special. I’m just a professional who’s good at observing geology. Right now, aren’t you relying on me to monitor the earthquake?”

That old rascal Sean was a crafty one. Now that he knew Cyrus was a high–tier Undead, he wasn’t about to foolishly reveal that he was a nuclear expert who could hand–build nuclear bombs.

As Zane said, humans and the Undead belonged to two different worlds. Their relationship could never be reconciled. Why would he stop being a respected human to become a lapdog for a monster that ate people? He didn’t want people cursing his name for the rest of

time.

Besides, his family was at Quinshaw Base! He wasn’t about to abandon his elderly parents to run off with a zombie.

Whether Cyrus believed Sean’s answer or not didn’t matter anymore.

The seismograph on the table suddenly emitted a piercing, shrill alarm. “Seismic waves arriving in three minutes! Predicted magnitude: 8.5. All personnel, relocate to open ground immediately. Countdown: 180 seconds… 179…”

Everyone immediately scrambled to their seats and buckled their safety belts, waiting for the quake to hit.

Josie and Cyrus, relying on their superior power, didn’t bother with the belts. They stood together in a silent, mutual understanding, prepared to witness the world–shattering Doomsday Quake with their own eyes.

Josie launched a drone, sending it spiraling into the sky. The aerial feed was projected in real–time onto a small screen fixed to the table so everyone could see the outside world.

For the moment, the earth was still peaceful.

Although the world had changed beyond recognition, the foundations of the old infrastructure remained. One could still make out the ruins of abandoned villages, towns, and fields.

But before anyone could reflect on how much had been lost, the ground beneath them gave a violent shudder.

The earthquake had finally arrived!

The alarm system began reporting the status in a series of sharp, rapid bursts. “First wave has arrived. Current magnitude: 5… 6… 7… 8…
