Chapter 479.
“Talk about a coincidence! This friend of mine is the walking encyclopedia of this base,” the scavenger leader said. “Anything to know, just ask him! Of course, good intel has a price…”
Josie Quinn offered a faint smile. “Don’t worry, I know the drill.”
“Great! I’ll take you there right now!” Hearing how agreeable Josie was, the man quickly led the way.
When they arrived, Josie looked up at a small three-story building. But in Sierra City, you couldn’t judge a building by the flour you saw above ground; there were usually levels hidden below. Sure enough, as Josie stepped closer, she saw that half the bulkingen carved into the hillside beneath them.
Most of the architecture in this area was like this. They weren’t built on flat ground. A roof might serve as a road, and that road mughe lead to another building. You couldn’t even count the floors properly. It was no wonder people said the Undead got lost here.
Even with a mind as sharp as Josie’s, she was nearly dizzy from the winding path the man took.
“We’re here! Look, the view is incredible. You can see over half the base from this spot!*
Josie turned around and realized he was right. Most of the base stretched out below her feet. It was the quintessential advantage of Sierra City-dominating the heights and seeing for miles.
The mountain air was fresh and moved quickly. Even though some of the rooms were subterranean, there wasn’t a hint of musty odor Josie was quite satisfied.
After checking the room, she paid the fee upfront. She didn’t have any base Credits, so she settled the bill with supplies. To the owner supplies were far more valuable than Credits anyway.
The couple running the place were overjoyed when Josie handed over a bag of salt and a bag of brown sugar. These were luxuries that money couldn’t buy anymore. At this base, salt and sugar were strictly rationed. Having Credits didn’t guarantee you could get them, you had to wait in line, and if you were late, you got nothing.
In gratitude, the landlord and his wife gave Josie the best room in the inn.
Josie took the key but didn’t go to her room immediately. Instead, she sat down to grill the owners for information about the base and the current state of Sierra City. Upon hearing that she wanted to ask for information, the couple invited her into a side tea room to talk
Calling it a “tea room” was a stretch. It was just a place to drink water brewed from tea dust-dust that had been steeped so many times it barely had any color left.
Josie didn’t touch their tea. Instead, she reached into her space and pulled out a bag of cheap green tea hoarded by June’s group before the apocalypse. Even though it was the cheapest brand back then, it was now a luxury reserved for the elites at the Summit. Ordinary people on the mountainside couldn’t dream of drinking it.
The moment they saw the bag of tea, the innkeepers’ expressions turned serious. The fact that she could pull items directly from a spatial storage right in front of them meant she was powerful and completely unafraid.
