Chapter 480.
“It’s fine. As long as I’m satisfied with the answers, my rewards have always been very generous. But the keyword is satisfied, “Jose said, pushing the tea back again. She got straight to the point. “Tell me about your Base Commander.”
“Everyone knows the basics about him. Our Base Commander is Malcolm Monroe. He’s forty-five, single, and has never been m He’s an incredibly ambitious man!” the landlord explained. “I have to admit, he reached the top because he knows how to endure and how to play his cards.”
“The coup back then was massive. It was no less dramatic than the tales of conquest in history books.”
“He’s very… rational. Nothing and no one can sway his resolve or change his mind once it’s made.”
“He runs the entire base with an iron fist.”
“Rumor has it he had a first love when he was young. They broke up for some unavoidable reason, and he never dated or married anyone
else after that.”
“What kind of ‘unavoidable reason’?” Josie asked.
“I heard he was too poor, and the girl’s family was against it,” the landlord replied. “I don’t know the specifics. Regardless, Malcolm spent the rest of his life working like a man possessed to make money and climb the social ladder.”
“He’s the ultimate example of someone rising from the bottom to the very top. People love talking about him because stories of an underdog winning like that are rare these days.”
“Fair enough,” Josie nodded. “And the structure? How is the base organized?”
“You mean the power structure?” The landlord paused. “The structure is quite simple. Malcolm handles both the military and the government. He has total control.”
“We used to have a regular army stationed in Sierra City. But wouldn’t you know it? Right when the apocalypse hit, there were skirmishes and friction happening in the south. The bulk of our forces had been deployed there for combat readiness.”
“So when the world ended, everything here went to hell. We were a leaderless mess!”
“By the time things stabilized, the military’s influence was negligible. Now, everything relies on Supers. No one fights with raw muscle
anymore.”
“Malcolm built a team entirely of Supers, about two hundred thousand of them. That’s the official army of our base.”
“Then there are the administrative divisions. It’s basic: planting, R&D, livelihoods, discipline, medical, and warehouse management. That’s about it.”
Josie asked. “It sounds simple, but with this many people, is there no education system?”
“None. That’s a privilege for the elite,” the landlady chimed in. “Only the people at the Summit have the right to send their children to school. Commoners like us don’t have that right. We don’t even think about it-staying alive is hard enough. Who cares about school?
“We just teach our kids how to read and do basic math ourselves,” she added. “We both went to college, so teaching the basics isn’t a problem.”
Josie nodded. That made sense.

On the other side of the region, June Quinn’s team finally made their slow arrival at Sierra City
Sylvia Sutton suddenly spoke up. “Now that we’re here, I actually remembered something”
“When I was young, I had a boyfriend,” Sylvia said. “He was from Sierra City. I wonder if I’ll run into him now that we’re base”
“Really? How come I never heard you mention him? June asked casually, “What’s his name?
“Malcolm Monroe, Sylvia answered. “Calculating his age, he should be forty-five by now.”
