Chapter 567.
Nadia Neville stood up, putting distance between herself and Malcolm Monroe again. She sat back in her chair and swept their framed phoen into a drawer with a swift motion.
The movement made Malcolm’s eyes flicker.
“I admit,” Malcolm said, breaking the silence, “that my marriage to Sylvia Sutton was wrong. But I had my reasons.”
Nadia gave a mocking laugh. Oh? Is that so? I suppose I’m the one being unreasonable then?”
Malcolm wore a bitter smile.”Don’t say that. You make it sound like I’m here to interrogate you. Didn’t we have a good time together?”
“It was fine. But you are you, and I am me,” Nadia replied coldly. “Now, you are still you, and I am only myself. There is no ‘us’ anymore. We, have no past.”
“You’re blaming me, I get it. I let you down, so you have every right to be resentful.” Malcolm nodded. “But I’m doing this for your own good. I’d say this even if you hated me.”
“It’s too hard for a woman to survive this apocalypse alone. If it were just our three bases like before, it would be fine.”
“But now we have an overbearing Josie Quinn. Our peace has been shattered.”
“She wants to merge the bases, and we can’t exactly say no. With her strength, she could slaughter all of Sierra City if she wanted to. But we can’t be too passive.”
“Your base is full of the elderly, the weak, and the sick. Most of them are just Norms. How are they going to survive in a world like this?” “But if you merge with me, it’s different. You can use all my connections and resources.”
“Together, we’ll have some real leverage. We won’t let Josie rule the world alone!”
“I know what you’re worried about. You’re afraid you’ll be mistreated after the merger, right?”
“If you can’t even trust me, how can you trust a Josie Quinn you just met a few days ago?”
“You know exactly what kind of man I am. Even if we aren’t together, I’ll still treat you as one of my own.”
“An old flame is never truly extinguished. I would never betray you.”
“But that Josie Quinn? Who knows what she’ll do!”
“I’m not forcing you to decide right now. Think about it.”
“Who else can you choose besides me? Felix Fletcher? Please. We both know what he’s like!”
“Who else can you rely on but me?”
Nadia lowered her eyes and let out a soft laugh.”Malcolm, where do you get the confidence to think I can’t live without you?”
I’m speaking from the heart,” Malcolm insisted.
“Then let me tell you my honest thoughts, Nadia said calmly. “Before I met you, I wasn’t some naive little girl. I’ve dated, I’ve been married! I know exactly how a man’s mind works!”
“I admit I once had feelings for you. I even thought that if we stayed together, I’d step back and support you. But that was based on the premise that you were worth it!”
“Clearly, you aren’t. You don’t deserve it!”
“I might be a love-blind person, but I’m not a woman without a brain. I’m not young anymore; I’m in my forties. I know exactly what I want!” “If you can’t give me the life I want, I’ll cut my losses and draw a line between us!”
