Chapter 60
“Nobody is going to let a Super like me go–especially when I look like an easy target,” Josie said with a mocking smile. “Controlling me is like owning a massive, walking vault.”
“Whether it’s lies, threats, or bribes, they aren’t going to let me walk away that easily.”
“If my storage space was small, they wouldn’t care. But it’s huge. Everyone is jealous, and everyone is greedy. They won’t stop until they own me.” “Here’s how it’ll go: first, they frame me. Then they stage some ‘emergency‘ to leave me cornered and desperate. Finally, they send in some hot guy to play the hero and ‘rescue‘ me so they can wrap me around their finger.” Josie let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “Damn, Zane. This paycheck is starting to look like way more trouble than it’s worth.”
Zane went dead silent.
He couldn’t even argue. He knew how the people above him played–she was likely right on the money.
“So, Zane finally found his voice. “What’s your move?
Take the bet, and I’ll do one last run. Don’t take it, and I’m out,” Josie said, looking completely unfazed. You guys can handle the last hundred million tons yourselves. You don’t really need me anymore anyway.”
Josie, I still think-”
‘Fine, fine. Let’s just say I’m doing this because I like you,” she cut him off. Besides, I’m bored. I could use the entertainment. But let me make one thing clear: I might look like an easy target, but I’m anything but. If things go south and I end up blowing the roof off the place, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Josie wasn’t just playing nice for the hell of it. She wanted Zane’s resources.
Everything she had asked for, he’d handed over without a second thought.
What did that tell her?
He was sitting on a mountain of even better gear, and she wanted in.
Finish this last run. If things go south like you say they will, I’ll do more than just give you another crate of supplies. I’ll give you two tickets to the Base, Zane said.
The Base? Josie’s mind raced. “All that construction I saw earlier… you’re building a sanctuary?”
You guys catch on fast,” Josie smirked. “So you know the undead are evolving, huh?”
So you’ve seen it too,” Zane said. “If they keep evolving, these open city streets are just death traps. We can’t stop them out here. We need a base–a ortress to lock our people in and keep the world out.”
Fort City has too many people. We can’t save everyone. We have to make… choices.”
You mean the ‘useful‘ people get in, and the useless‘ ones get left for dead, Josie mocked.
Zane didn’t deny it.
le couldn’t. That was the cold, hard reality.
The Base only holds three million,‘ Zane explained. “We’re out of time. We can’t build anything bigger.”
All those supplies and materials we’ve been hunting for? It was all for this.”
If you contribute enough, you earn a way in.
