Damon’s mind was a maelstrom, a tangled mess of conflicting thoughts. He turned, gazing out at the city below, his outward composure a stark contrast to the tumultuous storm raging within his heart.

Ethan walked to stand beside him, clearly reveling in their shared proximity.

Damon Roughly, how much is your family worth?

Ethan’s triumphant smile abruptly faltered.

Ethan had gone to such lengths to twist things, but all Damon heard was that Aubrey hadn’t physically cheated. She was simply materialistic, driven by

powerful obsession with money.

Seriously?

Was he seriously going to try and win Aubrey back with money?

Ethan felt like his plan had spectacularly backfired. He’d only wanted to mend his own relationship with Damon, but instead, he’d inadvertently cleared Aubrey’s name.

Ethan was seething inside, but he forced a calm facade. It’s hard to put an exact number on it, but the company is definitely valued in the billions.

Even a multibilliondollar company doesn’t necessarily hold vast amounts of liquid capital, and the net profits, once distributed, would be even less.

That wasn’t exactly a fortune.

Ethan, bristling with indignation, snapped, Damon, a woman like that? You’re actually still thinking of winning her back with money? Are you completely out of your mind?”

Damon murmured, a bitter edge to his voice, You’re not the first person to tell me I’m crazy.

Ethan clenched his trembling fists, tilted his head back, and took a deep, shaky breath, his face pale with fury.

Ethan gritted his teeth.Do you still love her?

Damon was silent for a long time. He then gave two words, flatly, I don’t love her.

Ethan scoffed, letting out a cold snort.Who would believe that?

His voice, when he finally spoke, was like a friend probing gently. If you don’t love her, why would you want her back?

Damon replied, his voice unburdened, Did I say I wanted to win her back?

Ethan’s eyes widened in realization. He leaned closer, lowering his voice as he pressed, Then why are you living with her? Are you just playing with her, planning to dump her once you’ve had your fill, to get revenge for her dumping you all those years ago? Is that it?

Damon’s deep eyes narrowed sharply, and he stared at Ethan in shock, falling silent.

In the living room.

Aubrey stood motionless, watching the two men outside on the balcony.

Separated by the glass door, she couldn’t hear a word they were saying.

Their backs looked remarkably harmonious.

Had they made up?

Ethan’s silver tongue was truly something else.

He was probably spinning a narrative, painting her as materialistic, emotionally unfaithful, and relentlessly pursuing him. Then, he’d clear his own name from the cheating scandalby emphasizing they’d never actually been intimate.

Whatever.

She had told just as many lies as Ethan to end things with Damon back then.

She’d definitely used Ethan, manipulating him to ensure her breakup went smoothly.

To be blunt, their friendshipEthan’s and Damon’shad shattered because of her.

Ethan betraying her now to get Damon back was, admittedly, understandable.

They’d broken up; her objective had long been met.

Now, the fact that Ethan hadn’t exposed her father’s imprisonment meant he’d already shown her more grace than she deserved.

She had no right to interfere, much less to protest.

Aubrey scooped up the bags from the floor and headed into the kitchen, putting away the food. She then emerged with the rest of the groceries.

Passing through the living room, she saw them still out on the balcony, deep in conversation.

Her unease only intensified.

Ethan had once mentioned that some straight men, when an ex wounds them too deeply, lose all faith in women, growing utterly repulsed. He’d even suggested their sexual orientation could naturallyreorient.

If Ethan truly intended to seduce Damon, he’d start by forging an unshakeable bond as a friend. Then, he’d slowly seep into Damon’s life, his thoughts, and eventuallyhis very body.

The more Aubrey thought about it, the more her anxiety coiled within her. She gripped the bag tight, wrestling with her turmoil for a long moment before she finally snapped. Unable to hold back, she rushed toward them, every instinct screaming.

She yanked open the glass door.

Damon and Ethan, hearing the sudden sound, turned their heads to face her.

Aubrey’s heart pounded. She swallowed hard, forcing the words out.Damon, she blurted, her voice a little shaky, the faucet in my bathroom isn’t running. Could youcould you take a look at it for me?

Damon’s brow furrowed in a slight frown of surprise. They’d been cohabiting for months, and this was the very first time Aubrey had ever asked him for a favor.

Alright,Damon said, his voice even. He turned, brushing past her, and entered the living room, heading directly for her bedroom.

Once Damon had disappeared into the room, Ethan bit his lower lip, his eyes narrowed into slits as he glared at Aubrey, his voice a furious whisper:Bree, we agreed on fair competition. How could you pull a stunt like that?

My faucet is actually broken. How is that a dirty trick?Aubrey whispered back, indignantly. You sold me out to get Damon’s forgiveness, and you even badmouthed me!

Ethan Sterling bit out each word, forcing his voice low.Every single word I’m saying now is a lie you told Damon years ago. You said Damon was too poor, that he’d never afford a mansion or drive a luxury car. You said you’d fallen in love with me, that you wanted to come back to Crestview City with me because I had more money than him. Weren’t those your words? What I’m saying right nowit’s nothing compared to the cruel things you

said to Damon back then.
