meant she wasn’t about to be nice to him now. She started giving orders right back.“I made you breakfast, so you can do the dishes and clean kitchen. Fair?”

Damon nodded. “Fair.”
Aubrey breathed a sigh of relief. Thank God she wouldn’t have to clean the kitchen.
She stood up, went back to her room, and emerged with her briefcase.
Damon took the dishes into the kitchen. When he came back out, he saw Aubrey getting ready to leave.
“I’ll take you. I can clean up the kitchen when I get back.”
“No thanks,” Aubrey said, putting on her shoes. She turned to meet his gaze, a strange tightness clenching her chest. Her voice dropped.“Aren’t you busy today? After you clean up the kitchen, you still have several blind dates waiting for you.”
Her words carried a distinct edge of jealousy, and her tone was far from pleasant.
Damon looked unfazed, his hands tucked into his pockets. “I’m actually pretty busy, so I won’t be seeing you off.”
Aubrey walked out, gently closing the front door behind her, and let out a shaky breath.
For the four years they were together, how had she never noticed how skilled he was at getting under her skin?
Outside.
The morning’s thick, damp chill leached all warmth from the sunlight.
A biting cold permeated the air.
Just as Aubrey stepped out of the entrance to Cloudbreak Heights, she spotted two familiar figures.
They saw her too, smiles already playing on their lips as they hurried towards her.
She froze, rooted to the spot, her mood growing increasingly agitated.
“Sis, good morning!”
Both of them beamed, speaking in unison.

He paid no attention to his physique, their mother having fed him until he was soft and pudgy.
Her brother’s girlfriend, Chloe, was twenty–two and from out of town. Her hair was streaked with vibrant, mismatched colors, and her overall style was aggressively tacky, like a girl trying too hard to be edgy. After dropping out of high school, she’d worked in a factory. She met Chloe’s brother online through their shared love for gaming, and once they moved in together, they’d spent every day holed up at home, neither of them having worked a single day since.
In her mother’s eyes, those two overgrown kids were her precious darlings.
Aubrey replied calmly,“Good morning. What brings you here?”
Brendan, holding Chloe’s hand, walked up to her.“Sis, Chloe and I are getting married.”
Aubrey forced a smile.“Congratulations.”
‘Are you free? We want to talk to you.”
Aubrey pulled out her phone to check the time.“I have a court appearance for a case at the firm today, and I’m really short on time. So, what do you need? And keep it brief.”
Chloe blinked, leaning closer to Brendan.“What did Big Sis mean by that?” she whispered.
Brendan frowned and shook his head.
Aubrey sighed, repeating patiently, “I have things to do and can only give you a little time. Tell me what’s most important, in the simplest terms. Don’t waste my time with small talk.”
Brendan blurted out, “Aubrey, Vivi’s pregnant! We need to get married fast. We have a place, no need to buy a house, and we can even hold off on a
