Chapter 78
‘Let me think,” Zane said, hesitating. “Even if we go back, they won’t just let us off the hook.”
“The second they realize that armory is bone–dry, they’re going to come for our heads,” Zane added grimly.
“But if we don’t go back, where do we even go?” someone asked.
“I say we ditch the uniforms and blend in with the civilians for now,” another soldier suggested. “It’s a crisis. I’m sure high command will understand once we finally get in touch with them.”
“Cap, what do you think?”
“Yeah, we’re following your lead!”
Zane let out a heavy sigh. “Fine. We find a place to lay low first and see how the wind blows.”
‘Copy that!”
Meanwhile, Josie had sprinted back to her camp like a whirlwind. She didn’t even have time to look at Winnie. Swipe, swipe, swipe. In a blur of motion, she began stashing everything in the camp into her dimensional space.
‘Uh, Boss? What are you doing?” Winnie stood there, spatula in hand, completely shell–shocked.
‘No time to explain. Move, move, move! Pack your shit, we’re leaving.” Josie finished stashing the last of the gear, spawned an off–road SUV out of nowhere, and yanked the door open. “Get in! Now!”
Winnie scrambled into the seat like a damn monkey.
Sticking with the Boss was the only way to survive, and Winnie wasn’t about to mess that up.
osie and Winnie vanished into the night. They hit the road and didn’t look back.
They didn’t have a choice.
osie’s spatial storage was a ticking time bomb–it was packed with trillions of dollars worth of high–grade weaponry.
f word got out, every predator in the wasteland would be hunting her down.
f she didn’t run now, she was just waiting to be caged.
She was right to move fast.
Barely thirty minutes after they cleared out, a fresh squad swarmed the camp, heading straight for their
A
spot.
Fuck! We’re too late!” one of them barked, staring at the empty platform. He was livid. “Is the girl a damn ghost? How did she bolt
o fast? We hauled ass the second we got the intel, and we’re still a step behind!”
Keep looking! Fan out! I want her found!”
We grab her, and Fort City is ours. Every damn inch of it!”
Sir!”
Once Josie cleared the mining district, she ditched the car. She swapped it for a rugged dirt bike, ready to move fast.
Winnie was on the back, clinging to Josie’s waist for dear life. It was the only thing keeping her from being hucked off.
Holy shit, this was a rush!
It was absolutely terrifying!
Two hours later.
Josie and Winnie pulled up to an abandoned resort.

It used to be a viral Instagram spot, a total tourist trap. Now it was a ghost town, but the tiny cabins were still in good enough shape to live in.
Josie dug around in her Space and pulled out an anti–surveillance jammer. She didn’t know if anyone was still tracking signals, but she wasn’t taking chances. Set it and forget it.
Winnie saw her working and jumped in to help get things settled.
With Winnie’s help, they had the new base set up in no time.
They didn’t need the RV for this stay.
The little cabins were clustered together like a patch of mushrooms.
