Mena

Nothing yet.Tate’s face darkened. I don’t know where the hell she’s hiding. It’s like she vanished into thin air.

If we can’t find her, then what?June said, her voice dripping with fake concern. She looked like the picture of innocence while twisting the knife. She’s being so selfish. It’s an honor to work for you, Tate. Not only did she turn you down, but she actually stole your weapon. It’s just wrong.

It makes me so mad just thinking about her! Honestly, I don’t even want to call her my sister anymore.

If I ever see her again, I’ll make sure she sees sense. I’ll convince her to stop playing games and start serving the baseand you, Tate.

June knew exactly what to say. With just a few words, she had Tate beamed with pride.

Now that’s what I like to hear!Tate said, his chest puffed out. She’ll fall into my hands sooner or later. There’s no escape. City belongs to me and my old man now. It’s our kingdom.

Fort

Since you’re being such a good girl, I’ll do you a favor. I’ll grant you and your parents full access to the base. Consider the entry fees

waived.

Oh, Tate! You’re the best!June practically melted into him, draping herself over his arm. Her voice was pure honey, the kind of sickly sweet tone that made your skin crawl. I’m all yours now. You’ll have to take real good care of me.

Hahaha! You got it!Tate let out a booming, arrogant laugh. He looked like a man who already had the whole world in his grip.

June had every reason to be hyped. Right now, a VIP pass to the base cost at least three tons of food.

For the three of them, that was nine tons.

Even though June was sitting on a decent stash of supplies, nine tons was no joke.

Giving up that much food would have been a massive hit, and she hated the idea of losing it.

Why burn through her own stockpile when she could just sweettalk her way into three free passes? It was a nobrainer.

This was June’s backup plan.

If the undead ever overran Highland Heights, she’d take her parents and hole up in the base.

Between the supplies she had stashed and the connections she was making, she’d be running the place in no time.

Right then, a server walked by with a tray of drinks.

June snagged two glasses. She pressed one into Tate’s hand, her voice dripping with honey. Thanks for looking out for us, Tate.

Cheers!

Cheers, Tate said, taking the glass and knocking it back in one go.

He didn’t feel a thing when the server brushed against him. In a flash, a key disappeared into the server’s palm.

The glass Tate had just finished was gone, too, slipped into a bag before anyone could blink.

The server melted into the shadows, a cold smirk tugging at his lips.

Tate, Junejust you wait. I’ve got a hell of a surprise for you.

The base was still a work in progress. Half the systems weren’t even online yet, and the security cameras were full of blind spots.

Sure, the food warehouse was crawling with guards.

They could stop anyone else, but they couldn’t stop Josie.

Josie pulled a strip of tape and pressed it firmly against the glass. Just like that, she had Tate’s fingerprints.

Mana

She flickered behind the guard and delivered a sharp chop to the neck. He went limp and hit the floor without a sound.
