June looked stunned. Then, her shock turned into raw grief and rage. “I gave Victor everything, and you’re dragging my name through the dirt? God as my witness, I’ve been nothing but loyal! I won’t let you talk to me like this!”

“If that’s what you think, you’ve clearly hated me from day one.” June scrubbed at her eyes, her face red and tear–stained. “Fine. I’m out. I’m renouncing the inheritance. You want this mess? It’s all yours. Good luck dealing with this disaster!”

With that, June shot a sharp, subtle look into the crowd.

One of June’s loyalists spoke up immediately. “If June is leaving, then I’m out too! But let’s get one thing straight–these supplies don’t just belong to Victor. We all bled for this stuff. If we’re splitting up, everyone gets an equal share!”

‘Damn right! Split it up! I’m following June!” another shouted.

Victor hasn’t done shit lately,” someone else added. “June’s been the one running the show, handling every little detail. We’ve all

seen how hard she works. I’m with her. Count me in!”

The rest of the fence–sitters looked around, thinking it over. It made sense.

The fence–sitters started nodding along. “Yeah! If we’re going our separate ways, let’s make it official. We’re the ones out there risking our lives for these supplies every day. There’s no way we’re walking away with nothing!”

Damn right! When Mr. Victor was alive, we followed his lead. We pooled everything together. But now that he’s gone? We split it. Every last bit, fair and square!”

You guys turning on June because you want to hog the stash for yourselves? Not gonna happen. We’re not letting that slide!”

Chaos erupted instantly. Both sides were at each other’s throats, screaming and shoving.

We’ve bled together. You’re all like brothers to me. I can’t just stand by and watch you all go to your graves.”

‘And you’ve seen what’s happening. The plants, the animals–everything is wrong. It’s only a matter of time before they start mutating, just like the undead did.”

‘When that happens, the world outside these walls won’t just be dangerous. It’ll be unlivable.”

‘None of us have superpowers. We’re just human. Against a horde of undead and those mutated monsters? We don’t stand a

chance.”

‘Look, I reached out to Mr. Jansen. I practically begged him to let you guys into the base. But you have to understand–even though he’s the Base Commander’s son, he’s got people breathing down his neck. He can’t just open the gates for everyone on a whim.”

“So, we came up with a compromise. On paper, we join Mr. Jansen’s ranks. But in reality? We stay independent. If you guys are okay with it, I’ll step up as leader for now. I’ll make sure we all survive this hellhole together.”

“Look, I really didn’t want to split the stash. But he’s right. These supplies were won with your blood and sweat. Why shouldn’t you get your share? I’m not going to let you guys down.”

“I’m calling it now–every man who went on a supply run gets an equal cut!” June declared, her voice firm. “If you’re with me, step

over here!”

Shuffle. Scuff. Thud.

A crowd of survivors swarmed behind June.

The old butler and Victor’s loyalists turned pale. Their faces twisted with pure rage.

June made it sound pretty, but this was a straight–up coup. She was seizing power right in front of them.
