Krystina could feel a pounding behind her eyes. This misunderstanding was out of control. If Emmy ever got the idea that she was using her position to mess around with a male subordinate, and with her own assistant on top of it, where would she even put her face? And that bracelet. “No way.” Krystina started pacing her office, then suddenly stopped as a thought struck her. “Don’t panic. I’ve got a way out.” She grabbed her phone and called Sylvia right away.

Sylvia picked up almost instantly, and Krystina spoke so fast it sounded like she was out of breath. “Mr. Lincoln came to check in on the company today. She’s in a great mood and looks really good.”

“When can you come back? Let’s get a group together, have dinner with Mr. Lincoln, and bring Abriella too.”

Sylvia practically squealed. “This is amazing! Mr. Lincoln is finally back! I’ll finish up here and come back right away!”

“Oh, and one more thing,” Krystina added, her voice a bit more deliberate. “Remember that seashell bracelet Danny gave you? Wear it tonight. Mr. Lincoln will love to see it on you.”

Sylvia agreed without thinking. “Sure, no problem.”

As soon as she hung up, Krystina called Abriella and gave her the same heads-up, not missing a beat.

Danny had been standing there the whole time, listening. His eyebrows drew closer together the longer Krystina spoke. He could see how badly she wanted to make it clear she had nothing to do with him, how she couldn’t wait to draw a line between them. Something heavy pressed against his chest, and he suddenly felt bitter about the whole thing. Was being linked to him really so unbearable for her? Was even a rumor enough to make her want to run?
