Behind them, countless fireworks continued to erupt in the night sky above the castle. Crimson, gold, sapphire... The dazzling interplay of light and shadow reflected upon their figures, stretching the moment into an eternity of burning heat.
They kissed with wild abandon. It was as if only the two of them remained in the entire universe. It felt as though only this seamless intimacy could fill the terror that had festered over countless days and nights.
The helicopter's rotors were still slowly spinning down, the resulting draft whipping everyone's clothes around.
Teresa stood by the cabin door. Her heart had initially been filled with panic and confusion, as she hadn't yet fully escaped the trauma of being abducted by terrorists. But at this moment, watching the scene of her daughter and son in law kissing amidst the sky full of fireworks, the rationality that had been scattered by fear slowly began to return. Teresa suddenly covered her mouth, tears rolling uncontrollably down her face.
Andrew wiped away her tears and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, his eyes carrying profound softness and devotion. "It is all over, Teresa. The children are perfectly fine, and we made it back alive."
Teresa nodded and gave a soft sound of agreement.
On the other side of the steps, Brett's eyes also grew red as he watched. He had never been in a relationship, nor did he understand romance. But seeing the captain and Emmy kissing with such reckless devotion, his nose suddenly stung fiercely. Captain James had been through so much. Emmy had been through so much as well. Enduring so many trials along the way, they were finally reunited with their children right here. Brett sniffled, tilted his head back, and gazed at the sky full of blooming fireworks. This was truly beautiful.
Time seemed to lose its meaning. It wasn't until the final firework died out in the night sky, leaving only wisps of trailing smoke, that James felt the slight trembling of the body in his arms. Feeling the scalding tears land on his cheeks only to quickly turn icy, and feeling her freezing little hands, he forced his rationality to painfully pull away from the kiss. He released her red and swollen lips, pressing his forehead against hers as he panted heavily.
His voice was impossibly hoarse. "Let's go inside first. It is too cold out here."
