After the bonfire party, Krystina went back to the hotel and spilled everything to Sylvia. Sylvia immediately burst out laughing, pounding her pillow until it was flattened.

“Oh my god, I can’t take it, my stomach hurts. Ms. Carter, are you trying to make me laugh myself to death so you can inherit my debt?”

Krystina sat at the edge of the bed, face dark, looking completely lost. “Is it really that funny?”

“I was just trying to do a good thing. I let bygones be bygones, tried to set him up, and he calls me crazy.”

Sylvia finally wiped away her tears, sitting up and giving Krystina a look reserved for people who just don’t get it. “Ms. Carter, are you really clueless, or just pretending?”

“Danny wasn’t insulting you. You drove him insane.”

She started counting on her fingers. “First, the guy saved you, and all you gave him in return was a children’s watch.”

“Sure, the watch is high-tech and you can modify it, but in Danny’s eyes, it basically says you see him as a kid.”

“For a young guy who’s desperate to look manly in front of you, that’s just brutal.”

Krystina protested, “But he stared at that watch in the museum forever. If he didn’t like it, why would he stare at a children’s watch for half an hour?”

Sylvia just sighed. “Did it ever cross your mind that maybe he wanted to buy it for someone else? Like a cousin’s kid, or his little brother or sister?”

“That watch costs fifty grand. Even if Danny makes good money, that’s no small sum.”

“And what did you do? You went ahead and bought it, then told him you knew he couldn’t bring himself to buy it.”

Krystina just froze. Her lips moved as if she wanted to argue, but nothing came out. When she thought about it, Sylvia made sense. Danny’s face back then really did look like he’d just been humiliated.
