A loud smack echoed through the thick jungle.
James slapped the back of Will’s helmet, hard. “I told you to shut up!”
A vein pulsed at James’s temple, his patience wearing thin. He knew this was the perfect moment to break out. Black Mamba probably thought they were already dead, which meant his guard would be down. If James doubled back now, he was almost certain he could finish the job.
But could he really leave a brother behind just to catch some kingpin? Trade Will’s life for a medal? No way. He couldn’t do that.
Without a second thought, James stuck two fingers in his mouth and let out a sharp, piercing whistle. The sound cut through the rainforest, impossible to ignore—a command, clear as day.
Within seconds, the scattered Dragonscale squad members emerged from the shadows, closing in fast. James didn’t waste a moment. He unstrapped his heavy gear and tossed it to the nearest teammate. Then he bent down, grabbed Will’s arm, and hoisted him up onto his back.
“All units, covering fire! We’re getting out, now!”
No one asked why. No one argued or worried about failing the mission. In Dragonscale, when James gave an order, that was it.
His teammates closed ranks around him, sprinting down the mountain as fast as they could. Will was jostled with every step, his consciousness slipping. Blood dripped steadily from his uniform, warm against the back of James’s neck.
“James…”
Will’s voice was barely there. So soft it could have been carried away by the wind.
“I’m so tired… I don’t think I can make it…”
“I don’t want to leave Abriella… We just got married… I never took her on a honeymoon…”
“What took you so long!” James’s shout hit like thunder, and the look in his eyes made the captain’s knees buckle. The captain felt completely helpless. This was rough country, wild jungle. They’d set out as soon as they got the signal, running flat out. Did the Dragonscale guys really think everyone could keep up with their insane speed?
No one said a word. James didn’t care about explanations. He pushed past them with Will on his back, heading straight for the river.
“Retreat! Get the boats over here now. Full speed!”
The special forces captain scrambled after him, blocking his way.
“James! We can’t retreat! Orders from the top—we have to catch the kingpin tonight! The main force is almost here. If we pull back now, it’s desertion!”
“If we let him escape, none of us will be able to answer for it!”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
