Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 1118

Emmy shook her head. “Really, you don’t have to, John.”

“You’ve had a long day too. You should get some rest. Don’t let me hold you up.”

“My friend’s waiting for me nearby. I’ll run back with her, so I’ll be totally safe.”

With that, she slipped off her lab coat, tossed her backpack over her shoulder, and headed out of the lab in a rush.

At the door, she looked around, then made a quick hand gesture in front of her.

Almost immediately, Penny appeared from the shadows, silent as a ghost. She was dressed head to toe in black athletic wear, blending right into the night.

Emmy was used to Penny’s sudden, quiet entrances. She just nodded at her.

They didn’t need to say a word. The two of them fell in step and jogged off together into the cool Boston night.

John locked the lab and hurried out, keys in hand, only to see the two women already far down the street. He frowned, watching the woman in black next to Emmy, confused.

Where did she even come from?

He always saw her near Emmy, mysterious and quiet. She definitely didn’t seem like a Harvard student.

A few times, John had turned away for just a second and she’d vanish, like she was never there at all. He couldn’t figure out how Lin made friends with someone so strange.

He shook his head and decided not to overthink it. Maybe Emmy just knew her from back home.

Still, even with the two of them together, they were both young women, running through Boston this late. It wasn’t safe.

John sighed, got in his car, and followed from a distance. Only after they made it into Harvard’s security patrol zone did he turn his car around and disappear into the night.

Back at the dorm, Emmy went straight to the bathroom for a shower.

She kept her headphones in the whole time.

Even with the water pouring over her head and the hairdryer roaring, she could still hear the steady breathing in her ears.

It was James, on the other end of the call, sound asleep. His breaths were deep and even, tinged with exhaustion.

Emmy dried her hair and set her phone on the nightstand.

James was still sleeping, just as he had been two hours ago, propped up against the white wall behind his metal bedframe, head perfectly straight.

He had his phone in his hand, probably resting on his knee, and the camera captured every line of his strong, serious face.

Emmy reached out, tracing the shape of his eyebrows and eyes on the screen with her finger.

She could lead Emmy’s security team, build her own elite crew, and be the best of the best.

Thinking about that, Penny gritted her teeth and pushed herself to keep memorizing those wormy English words.

The night got deeper.

The wall clock crept past one in the morning.

From the bedroom, Emmy called out, her voice muffled and sleepy. “Penny, it’s really late. Let’s turn off the lights and go to sleep.”

Penny closed her book right away. “Okay, Boss.”

She hopped off the bed, turned off the light in Emmy’s room, then switched off the one in the living room.

She climbed back onto the sofa bed and was softly snoring in no time.

In the bedroom, Emmy’s phone screen gave off the only light.

She lay on her side, staring at James, not wanting to end the call.

But the long day had caught up to her. Her eyelids drooped, and she finally drifted off, still holding her phone tight.

She didn’t know that two hours later, the video call would suddenly disconnect.
