Emmy picked up as soon as Abriella called. “Hey, Abriella. How’s Will? Did he wake up?”

Abriella sounded way calmer than before. After a quick update about Will, she switched gears, going straight for Mercedes with no warning.

“Emmy, I swear, Mercedes is honestly just shameless. Back then, James treated her better than he treated anyone, even me. And what did she do? She turned around and betrayed him. Just left Nelson Corporation and ran off to Hollywood to chase her superstar dreams. Now she actually has the guts to come back and look for James.”

Emmy blinked, not sure she was following. “Wait… what even happened between them? Do you know the whole story?”

“Of course I do.” Abriella let out a sharp laugh. “I never told you before because I didn’t want you getting jealous. But I seriously never thought she’d have the nerve to come crawling back to James.”

She took a breath, her voice dropping a little. “This was, what, over ten years ago? Back then, Mercedes wasn’t anybody. She was just this underage girl doing extra work on sets, totally broke, nothing but a pretty face and a nice voice to her name. Then some entertainment company scouted her for a talent show. You know what the industry’s like, especially back then. If you didn’t have connections, the only way up was doing whatever the investors wanted.”

Emmy’s face twisted. She’d heard rumors about all that before.

Abriella paused for a second. Her voice got quieter, a little sad. “But then… Jamie died. James hadn’t taken over Nelson Corporation yet. Without Jamie to protect her, Mercedes was basically frozen out by the company for four years. When James finally came back and took over, he immediately brought her back, just for Jamie’s sake. He gave her more resources, pushed her to the top spot in the company. Anyone else would have been grateful. But not Mercedes.”

You could hear Abriella’s frustration building. “She probably thought James owed her. So as soon as Hollywood came calling, she just left. Didn’t even say a word. Because of her, the entertainment division’s stock crashed, they lost billions. She even had a huge fight with James about it. But even after all that, James still treated her so well it made me jealous. Even when they fought, he was secretly helping her out behind the scenes. A few years back, when her Hollywood movie became a hit, she barely had any screenings here. James personally booked out a bunch of theaters just to make sure her box office numbers looked good…”

Abriella suddenly caught herself, realizing she might have gone too far, especially when she admitted being jealous of how well James treated Mercedes. She quickly tried to explain, flustered and stumbling over her words.
