Abriella swallowed a spoonful of soup, her voice rough and tired.
“Don’t stare. It’s been like this every day.”
“Those guys... they’ve all just come back from the front.”
She barely finished before a group of nurses rushed past, pushing a gurney at full speed.
The soldier on it couldn’t have been much older than twenty. His right leg was gone, blown away, blood soaking half the sheet and dripping onto the floor in thick, dark drops. It was impossible to look away.
“Plasma, now! Get the defibrillator!” A doctor shouted, climbing up onto the gurney to start CPR right there.
They didn’t even make it to the operating room. The doctor suddenly froze.
He checked the soldier’s eyes, then let his hands fall. He pulled off his mask, shaking his head.
“He’s gone.”
“Time of death, nine forty-five.”
For a second, the whole hallway just stopped.
Then the soldier’s friends broke down, sobbing so hard it echoed off the walls.
Emmy dug her nails into her palms, so tight she hardly felt the sting.
A life, so young and full of promise, had just ended in front of her.
He was probably someone’s whole world back home.
Emmy’s eyes burned. She turned to Abriella, her voice shaky.
“Are James and his squad out there too?”
Abriella’s eyes filled with tears again as she nodded.
“Yeah. From what I’ve heard, their team’s always first to go in.”
Emmy felt like her heart was being crushed. She couldn’t catch her breath.
Outside, the sky was growing even darker, heavy with the threat of snow.
She needed air, needed to get away from the suffocating sadness for a minute.
Passing by the general surgery ward, she noticed the door was wide open.
What she saw inside rooted her to the spot.
