“You’re still hurt!”
Emmy hastily wiped her tears away, her gaze darting to the group of soldiers behind James. They leaned on each other, bloodied and exhausted. Seeing their wounds, guilt twisted in Emmy’s chest. She couldn’t believe she’d let her own emotions slow down their treatment.
Quickly, she bowed deeply to all of them, her voice trembling with sincerity and worry.
“I’m so sorry, everyone. I got carried away and wasted your time.”
She straightened up, urgency in her tone.
“Come on, the doctors are waiting for you over there. Please go get your wounds checked, and make sure they look at everything.”
But instead of looking annoyed, those battered special forces guys all broke into big grins.
“It’s nothing, sis! These scratches don’t even count!”
“Yeah, don’t worry about us. We’re tough. Even if we bled dry, we’d still run another five miles. What’s a few more minutes?”
One of them laughed, eyes bright with mischief.
“If you really want to make it up to us, why not give James a kiss? Let us live vicariously for a second.”
That did it. The whole group burst into laughter, egging each other on with gleeful shouts.
“Yeah, give him a kiss!”
“You haven’t seen James in months, right? This calls for a real kiss—a French one!”
“Come on, James! Be a man. Don’t make your wife take the lead!”
“Kiss her! Kiss her!”
Their voices echoed down the hallway, loud enough that even the doctors and nurses peeked out to see what the fuss was about.
Emmy’s face turned bright red. She was flustered, embarrassed, and a little lost as she looked up at James.
James just stood there, silent for a moment. Something flickered in his deep eyes, and his gaze drifted down to Emmy’s lips. He wanted to kiss her—really, really wanted to. The urge to pull her close and lose himself in her was almost overwhelming.
But then reality hit. James pressed his tongue to the roof of his mouth, tasting the gritty bitterness there. Three days and nights in the jungle, drinking muddy water, chewing on dry rations. He hadn’t brushed his teeth in days.
If he kissed her now, he’d probably gross himself out, let alone Emmy.
No way. He wasn’t about to let his wife see him like this.
James took a steadying breath, pushing down the heat rising in his chest. He squeezed Emmy’s hand, then turned and shot a cold, warning look at the rowdy group. Instantly, the mood shifted.
“Got a lot of energy, huh?”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
Really, why is there always some home wrecker added to these stories? I always enjoyed reading this until now. Had to go and ruin a beautiful love story....
