John lifted his shoulders in a helpless shrug. “Guess I’m just a little unlucky. My advisor thinks I’m working through projects too fast.”
“I’ve finished three in the past two years. This last one, I only took it over six months ago. The rest of them have been at it for almost three years.”
Emmy couldn’t help rolling her eyes in her mind. Seriously? Humblebrag much?
Unlucky? Please. That was just pure talent getting him “special attention” from his advisor. He’d solved a problem in half a year that had stumped a whole group for three. Even she had to admit, that kind of skill was something to be jealous of.
“My professor thinks I didn’t spend enough time on the project, that I need more depth.” John let out a sigh. “So now he’s making me do another one to fill out the timeline.”
That got Emmy thinking.
What was a headache for him could actually be a win for her. John was insanely capable. If they worked together, her project could move way faster than she’d hoped.
She broke into a grin and nodded. “That sounds perfect to me. Once I pick a direction, let’s chat about the details.”
John’s lips curled into a smile when he saw how quickly she agreed.
“Your company’s working on building an AI ecosystem, right?” he asked. “Honestly, I think that’s a great starting point for a deep research project.”
Emmy hesitated, looking at him uncertainly. “But that’s not really your field, is it?”
John stared straight ahead, his eyes suddenly thoughtful and proud. “Emmy, for people like us, fields aren’t boundaries. They’re just tools.”
“Besides, the network structure of an ecosystem and the synaptic connections in the human brain actually have a lot in common at the core.”
“I want to get out of my comfort zone, see what’s out there besides neuroscience.”
He paused, and for a split second, Emmy caught something in his blue eyes. It was a mix of tenderness and wild excitement.
“Of course, mostly...” He glanced at her, then stopped himself.
“Mostly what?” Emmy pressed.
He laughed softly, turning his gaze back out the window.
“Mostly, I’d be thrilled to work on a project with a tech genius like you.”
“It’s like being a lonely mountain climber and finally running into someone else at the top.”
“I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens when our ideas collide.”
Emmy got it. This was that rare connection between top minds, where respect and ambition meet. It was the thrill of finding a real rival, maybe even a soulmate.
Her heart picked up speed. It felt good to meet someone who could actually keep up.
“Alright,” she said, nodding hard, eyes lighting up with determination. “I’ll start brainstorming in that direction. I’ll talk to my advisor later and put together a rough plan.”

Hopefully Emmy is level headed like she normally is and they can get past this. I'm praying!...
OMG! How can this be happening! If there is an issue in a marriage shouldn't it be talked through instead of someone believing rumors?...
