The next morning, Emmy woke up to a racket coming from the bathroom. Still half asleep, she opened her eyes and saw Harlene standing in front of the mirror, patting serum onto her face. Emmy reached for her phone, squinting at the time. “Harlene, why are you up so early?”
Harlene caught her eye in the mirror, hands busy, voice bubbling with excitement. “Stakeout! That insanely hot guy from last night is on this floor. If I want even the tiniest chance with my soulmate, I have to give up on sleep and camp out. No regrets.”
Emmy just shook her head. “Good luck with that. I’m going back to sleep for ten more minutes.”
By the time Emmy got up, washed, and pulled on her crisp white suit, she was fastening the last pearl button on her cuff when the door suddenly burst open. Harlene’s voice rang out, breathless. “Emmy! Come here, quick!”
Emmy looked up, a small smile tugging at her lips. “What, did you finally catch your mystery man?”
She was honestly amused. She’d never seen Harlene like this before. Even Emmy was starting to wonder, just what kind of guy could turn Harlene into such a mess?
But Harlene shook her head, a mix of excitement and gossip lighting up her face. “No, not him. Mercedes is here.”
“Mercedes? As in, the Mercedes?”
Emmy’s hands stilled. Harlene stared at her, almost scandalized. “Emmy, aren’t you even surprised? This floor is supposed to be all research teams. Why would Mercedes be here?”
Emmy turned back to the mirror, smoothing her collar, her expression calm. “Maybe she’s here for a show. Or some brand event.”
She didn’t really care about Mercedes. If anything, after some things that happened in the past, she’d rather keep her distance.
“I still need to finish packing. You go ahead.”
Harlene huffed. “Seriously, you have zero sense of fun.” She threw her hands up. “Whatever. If you won’t go, I will. This is the closest I’ll ever get to a superstar.”
“Why is she even on this floor?”
Someone pointed out the guys behind Mercedes, burly men carrying what looked like takeout bags. “Check out her bodyguards. Are those breakfast bags?”
“Do you think she’s delivering breakfast to a friend?”
Before anyone could answer, Mercedes raised her hand and knocked on the dark wooden door in front of her. Room 6023.
Harlene’s eyes went wide. Wasn’t that the suite the ridiculously good-looking guy stayed in? She’d watched him swipe in there last night with her own eyes.
She slapped a hand over her mouth, barely holding in a gasp. “Oh my god, she’s here for that hot guy from last night!”
