This field was seen as the next big breakthrough for humanity, a real game-changer. The host’s voice took on a serious, weighty tone. “Up next, we have one of the most important awards of the year, the Award for Excellence in Brain-Computer Interface.”
“We have three teams in the running. They are…”
The big screen lit up, rolling out highlight reels for each team. The first two were legendary, world-famous labs with reputations that spoke for themselves.
Then John’s team flashed onto the screen. There they were, surviving on endless late nights and takeout sandwiches, buried in lines of code and tangled models. The host read out the names as the video played.
“Team members: John Suede, Harlene Smith…”
Finally, Emmy’s name came up.
“…and Emmy!”
Her name stayed on the screen, bold and clear. Emmy.
The entire room seemed to freeze, but Isabel’s team felt like a bomb had just detonated right in their midst.
Liu stared at the screen, eyes about to pop out of her head. She couldn’t believe it. “Wait… that has to be someone else with the same name, right? There’s no way. How could Emmy possibly show up at a global event like this?”
Someone else next to her frowned, clearly skeptical. “Yeah, no way. Emmy, working with Harvard PhDs? If that’s her, I’ll write my name backwards.”
“I’m with you. There’s just no way. She couldn’t even pull a team together back home, and now she’s in the US, working with Harvard’s best? Unless those PhDs have lost their minds.”
Isabel sat quietly between them. She didn’t say a word, but her hands tightened on her lap.
Suddenly, the award music picked up, pounding like a heartbeat through the hall. Every single person turned their attention back to the stage.
“Yes!” John practically launched himself out of his seat, fist in the air, shouting with pure joy.
Everyone else was screaming, hugging each other, barely able to believe it. Their faces were lit up with the kind of happiness that just takes over.
This was the joy of winning.
Emmy stood up too, a quiet smile on her lips that said it all.
John was glowing, face flushed with excitement. He turned to his teammates with a big wave.
“Come on, team! Let’s go get our award!”
