Emmy walked into her hotel room and went straight for her suitcase. Now that the resort had wrapped up all its leasing deals, there was no real reason for her to hang around for the gala. She packed up her things in no time, already planning to stop by Boston before flying out to Fiji.
Harlene leaned against the doorframe, looking confused.
“Emmy, are you seriously not going to wait for your husband?”
Emmy lowered her lashes, hiding a hint of sadness in her eyes. “I’m not waiting.” She paused, then added, “Some things… when he finally figures them out, he’ll come find me.”
She closed her suitcase and looked straight at Harlene. “You should start packing, too. We’ll head back to Boston and tomorrow, you’re flying with me on the private jet.”
Harlene’s eyes went huge. “A private jet? No way!” She squealed. “I can’t believe I actually get to experience something like this!” She grabbed her phone. “I have to tell John so he doesn’t take forever.”
Even though Harlene was still kind of tempted to stop by the gala, the thought of riding in a private jet clearly won out.
Emmy glanced at the clock. There was still plenty of time, so she didn’t rush anyone, just waited patiently.
By the time night had completely fallen over the city, they were all rolling their suitcases out the hotel doors. A sleek, black van was waiting for them by the curb. The driver stepped out and opened the door respectfully.
Emmy was just about to get in when Harlene tugged on her sleeve and lowered her voice. “Emmy, your husband just came out, too.”
Emmy froze for a second, then turned to look where Harlene was staring. On the other side of the hotel’s revolving doors, James was striding out with Keaton. He looked even taller and more impressive under the glow of the city lights, impossible to miss.
“Are you sure you don’t want to go say hi?” Harlene whispered.
Emmy shook her head and pressed her lips together. “No, let’s just go.”
She started to get in the car, but then…
A man in a dark jacket came out of nowhere, striding straight over to James. He said something in a low voice. James’s expression flickered, his cool aloofness shifting for a moment. Then, he nodded and followed the guy down a side street off to the edge of the hotel. The area was almost pitch black, with a couple busted streetlights and no cameras in sight.
As soon as the words left his mouth, several big guys emerged from the shadows, one after another, until there were seven or eight of them. They had tattoos up and down their arms and were gripping metal bats or iron pipes, every one of them with a mean, dangerous look on their face.
The bald guy in front twirled a steel pipe in his hand and grinned menacingly. “Not bad, kid. No wonder someone paid good money for us to break three of your ribs. If you’re smart, you won't fight back... it’ll hurt less.”
James’s eyes narrowed. There was a flash of something cold, almost predatory, in his stare. He slowly undid a button on his suit jacket.
“Break my ribs?” His voice was icy, the corners of his mouth lifting in a disdainful smirk. “You’d better hope you’re up to the job.”
The troublemakers bristled, clearly ticked off by his attitude.
“Big mistake! Get him!” Bald Guy barked.
They all raised their weapons and swarmed forward.
