Emmy listened to his reasoning, and honestly, she just found it even more ridiculous.
She looked at him and said with complete seriousness, “James, there’s absolutely no way John has a crush on me.”
“What we have is just genuine mutual respect. We get each other, you know? Like two nerds who appreciate each other’s skill. That’s all there is. If something that simple gets twisted into romance, then does anyone in research ever have real friendships anymore?”
James saw the look on her face, the one that screamed, “You don’t get science at all.” He pressed his tongue to the back of his teeth, trying not to react. Fine, pure friendship, sure. The mood between them had just started to improve, and he wasn’t about to ruin that by starting an argument. Besides, the blond guy was history anyway. Pushing this topic further would just annoy her.
“Alright, you’re right. I overreacted,” he conceded, going along with her.
Emmy, clearly feeling like she’d won, summed it all up, “So the truth is, you don’t trust me.”
She set the box down on the nightstand and decided she was done with the discussion. “Whatever. Go shower, you reek of perfume.”
James frowned and leaned down to sniff himself, but he didn’t smell anything weird at all. He always thought he had a sharper nose than most people, so he honestly couldn’t figure out what she was talking about.
Noticing his confusion, Emmy got up and headed over to his suitcase to grab his pajamas for him. That subtle trace of Mercedes’s perfume on his clothes was driving her a little crazy, and she just wanted it gone.
She knelt beside the suitcase, rummaging for something clean to wear, when James suddenly seemed to realize something. His expression changed in a flash.
“Wait, don’t—”
He tried to stop her, but it was already too late.
Emmy had just picked up a pair of black silk pajamas when something small slipped out from between the folds and dropped to the carpet with a soft sound.
She glanced down and immediately recognized the packaging. Bold English letters were printed right across the front.
XXL. Ultra Thin.
Emmy bent over to pick up the box and turned to look at James, her expression absolutely deadpan. They hadn’t even sorted out everything between them yet, and he already had his mind on that?
She lingered over it for a while before reluctantly closing the lid and locking it away in the safe beside the nightstand.
Suddenly, she remembered something. Her whole vibe changed—she seemed sharper, more focused. She pulled an old phone from the nightstand, fired it up, and quickly scrolled through her messages.
She found Dean’s death certificate and the DNA report from the Fijian military. Emmy zoomed in, carefully checking every word, every seal.
Time of death, location, identity confirmation, DNA match—99.99 percent. The documents were as official as they could get, stamped and signed by Fijian Major General Calony himself.
Everything about them should have been trustworthy. Still, the more she stared, the deeper her frown grew. The documents were fine. It was just her instinct—a gut feeling you get after living with someone for years, after loving and hating them—that told her something was off.
She heard the quiet click of the bathroom door unlocking.
Emmy immediately turned off the old phone, slipped it away in a drawer, and picked up her usual phone, logging back into her account.
A wave of warm, damp air filled the bedroom, carrying the faint, clean scent of body wash. Without even thinking, Emmy looked up—and for a second, her breath caught.
