Emmy glanced away, a lazy smile flickering on her lips.
“Of course not.”
“You’re the ambassador and he’s the chairman. It was just a business greeting. Why would I care?”
“You can keep watching. I’m going to change.”
Without another word, she turned and headed for the bedroom.
Mercedes’s smile wavered. She hadn’t expected Emmy to react like this. Wasn’t she supposed to get jealous or at least a little upset? Why did she seem so cool about everything? Annoyance pinched the corners of Mercedes’s mouth. No way was Emmy really this calm. She had definitely thrown a fit back at the gala over her and Nico. If Emmy wanted to act generous, Mercedes was happy to keep the show going.
She snatched up the remote and turned the TV volume up. The reporter’s voice immediately echoed around the suite.
“…the chairman’s personal welcome is a first. Not only does it break the industry’s tradition of keeping upper management out of marketing, it also shows how close the two of them really are!”
In the bedroom, Emmy stood in front of the closet, flipping through hangers. The loud TV voices drifted in, making her shake her head with a helpless smile. Mercedes was unbelievable. Top of her field, sure, no one could say otherwise. But this behavior? Like a spoiled child, honestly. Emmy picked out a simple business outfit and got dressed without another word.
The silence in the living room stretched on. Mercedes sat hunched on the sofa, getting more irritated as the endless news coverage played. Not a sound from the bedroom. Her patience was running out.
She turned and glared at Penny, who was standing nearby. Penny’s face was expressionless, her arms tucked neatly behind her back, standing like a statue.
The sight was infuriating. Mercedes frowned, her words sharp. “What is taking your boss so long? Does it seriously take this long to change clothes? Go hurry her up. I don’t have all day to sit here waiting.”
Penny didn’t even flinch. Her voice was cool, almost like marble. “If you’re in a hurry, Miss Mercedes, you’re free to leave. I’ll let Madam know you stopped by when she’s ready.”
Mercedes stared at her in disbelief. “You—!”
That made Emmy burst into a warm smile. Over by the sofa, Mercedes’s expression darkened. She stared daggers at the robot, her nails biting into her palms.
“Bring it over,” Emmy said, still in a bright mood, waving Penny over.
Penny moved right away, carefully unpacking the steaming shrimp dumplings, silky congee with pork and century egg, and fluffy custard buns, setting them out on the table. The scent was mouthwatering. Every dish was something Emmy loved.
The robot did a playful spin and chirped, “Enjoy your meal, Madam! And please give me a five-star rating! Sending hugs!”
Emmy couldn’t help laughing as she tapped the little robot’s screen.
“Alright, you get five stars.”
“Yes! Amazing!” the robot cheered, and little fireworks danced across its display as it happily rolled out of the room.
