The two workaholics looked like they were about to just start a meeting right there at the dining table.
Emmy watched them both, rolling her eyes in disbelief. Without missing a beat, she set her hand on top of James’s, stopping him from grabbing the stack of files. Her tone was calm, but it left no room for argument.
“Doesn’t matter how urgent it is, finish your meal first.”
She glanced at Mr. Aldridge and added, “You don’t have to rush either. Let him eat.”
James glanced down at her pale fingers on the back of his hand, a slightly helpless smile flashing in his eyes. He could be tough with anyone else but melted in front of his wife.
“Okay, whatever you say.”
He gently squeezed her hand, then looked at Andrew and managed an apologetic look.
“I’ll just be a few minutes. Gotta listen to the boss at home, you know?”
Andrew grinned at the two of them, his eyes full of amusement. “Of course. Go ahead. Eat.”
James dropped back into his chair and opened the lunchbox. Emmy got to work, scooping out soup and rice, laying out a few of his favorite dishes right in front of him.
“Slow down, the soup’s hot.”
But James was already digging in. Emmy barely had time to pour water for him and Andrew before she came back to find the rice and food wiped clean, just a little soup and some greens left alone at the corner of his tray.
All of that in barely a few minutes.
She just shook her head in disbelief.
James wiped his mouth, packed away the containers, and stood. “Andrew, let’s finish up over there.”
He nodded toward the lounge sofas. The second they sat down, conversation slid right back into work mode, their low voices mixing with the quiet office air.
Emmy didn’t sit around either. She went behind the big desk and took James’s seat, picking up one of the unfinished files for the grand opening. This kind of work was second nature to her now. She figured he didn’t need to carry the weight alone. Whatever she could do to help, she’d do it, no hesitation.
For a while, all anyone could hear was the sound of papers flipping and the steady hum of their conversation.
Just as Emmy finished signing off on a few security reports, there was a quick knock at the door.
“Relax. We’re on our turf.”
James hesitated, then nodded. He turned to Keaton.
“Go with her.”
Keaton straightened up. “Yes, sir.”
Emmy gave Andrew a quick smile, then walked out with Keaton by her side. As soon as they left the operations center, the thick, salty sea air hit them.
Climbing into the shuttle, Emmy turned to Keaton.
“Call the front desk. Make sure there’s a sea-view suite available.”
Keaton glanced at her, a little annoyance slipping into his voice.
“Are you sure we have to give Tyler such a nice room? The guy’s always making trouble for you and the Chairman. A regular suite ought to be enough.”
