Emmy watched the two of them playing their little act and honestly, she couldn’t help but feel a wave of sarcasm inside. Was this really the time? Did they really think they could swoop in while James was out of sight, flashing their big brother and sister-in-law badges, hoping to get a say in the resort’s future?
Her smile got a bit brighter, but her eyes lost all warmth as she fixed them on Isabel. “That’s a pretty funny way to put it.”
She leaned in, not bothering to lower her voice. “So, Isabel, are you saying you only took my code for Smart Health to help Sync get famous?”
The smile on Isabel’s face faded in an instant. She darted a quick glance around. Some guests were obviously eavesdropping now. Embarrassed, Isabel dropped her voice, her words sharp. “Emmy, your Sync already won. Isn’t that enough for you?”
Emmy just kept her polite smile, her words turning ice-cold. “I’d suggest you remember whose place you’re standing in. When you’re on someone else’s turf, maybe learn to keep a lower profile.”
With that, she nodded, turned, and walked away without looking back.
Isabel glared at Emmy’s retreating figure, her chest so tight with frustration she could barely breathe. Tyler looked just as stormy. In over thirty years, he’d never tasted public humiliation like this. All it took was one stumble and suddenly even a woman felt bold enough to put him in his place.
Isabel hissed, still keeping her voice low. “Why didn’t you say something? All those people just saw her tear me down and you let it happen?”
Tyler gave her a weary look. “Because she was telling the truth. There’s no use lying about it.”
He paused for a moment, then said, “This is not the time to pick a fight with her. What you need to do is apologize. You’re sisters-in-law. At least pretend for the crowd that things aren’t so bad between you.”
Isabel looked at her husband, hating how fake he sounded. She couldn’t help snapping, “Maybe if you hadn’t screwed up with James, I wouldn’t always have to clean up the mess. Don’t forget, you’re the one who gave me the Sync code. And now…”
“Stop it.”
“Damn it…” she muttered, shifting away from a couple more lingering stares. The difference between her and Emmy was enough to drive her insane.
Right then, someone blocked out the worst of those looks. A tall figure stepped into view, moving casually but with purpose. Abis, drink in hand, stopped beside her.
“Did you find your Nico yet?”
Mercedes shook her head, sounding annoyed. “No. Tyler couldn’t get it out of her either.”
Behind his sunglasses, Abis frowned. Suddenly, a cold, uneasy feeling pricked at him.
Had someone caught on?
