Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 1291

James’s gaze was so intense it felt like he could see straight through Emmy’s thoughts, and it made her heart race for all the wrong reasons. She looked away, refusing to meet his eyes. She could never tell him, not in this lifetime, that she had the same ability to see the future. Who would ever believe that? Anyone would say she was crazy. Even worse, the whole being reborn business brought back too much pain, too many memories she just wanted to forget. There was no way she’d ever let James in on that part of her past.

Emmy took a steadying breath and forced herself to sound bold. “Don’t worry about how I know. I just do. What matters is I gave you a heads up, so just make sure you’re careful.”

To mask how jittery she was, she let out a dramatic yawn and flopped back onto the bed. “I’m wiped out. Seriously, I don’t have the energy for any more talking. Go ahead and leave, let me sleep for a bit. I’ll get up and wash up later.”

James stood up slowly, his tall frame casting a shadow over her, making Emmy feel even smaller under his scrutiny. But he didn’t walk away. His deep, unreadable eyes stayed fixed on her, like he was putting together every strange thing he’d ever seen her do. Her uncanny knack for business, the weird tension with Dean, the way she always seemed to make the right move at just the right time… It was as if she knew things no one else possibly could.

All the little suspicions he’d collected over time started clicking together, falling into place. Emmy definitely had secrets. And whatever she was hiding, it all led back to Dean, somehow. The silence in the room thickened until it felt almost suffocating.

With her eyes squeezed shut, Emmy forced herself to pretend to sleep, but every muscle in her body was wound tight. She could feel James watching her, and the urge to bolt made her want to scream. But he didn’t push, didn’t demand answers. There was only a heavy sigh from him, too soft for anyone but her to notice.

“Alright. Get some rest,” he said quietly. His warm, deep voice lingered, then she heard his steps fading away before the quiet click of the door closing.

Only then did Emmy’s body relax. Her nerves felt frayed, and she sat up, pressing her fingers hard against her temple. James was so smart. If he hadn’t already figured out part of what was going on, he was close. Would he think she was a freak if he ever found out the truth? But how could she possibly explain something so impossible, something that shouldn’t exist?

Emmy let out a long sigh. Her head felt like a tangled ball of string, impossible to unravel. She realized she felt sticky and gross, so she forced herself out of bed and shuffled to the bathroom. Warm water poured over her as she slid down in the tub, soaking in the comfort and finally breathing a bit easier.

There was a pause, and then Sylvia spoke, voice low and fraught with mixed emotions. “That’s okay. I really want to stay here at the hospital. Steve… well, he’s a pain in the ass most of the time, and petty too, but tonight… he got hurt because he was trying to save me. He made sure I got away. If he hadn’t, he wouldn’t be lying here now, hurt this bad. I can’t leave him, Emmy. I just... I wouldn’t feel right.”

Emmy just listened, heart aching a little. She didn’t try to convince Sylvia otherwise. “Alright then. If that’s what you want, stay there with him. If you need anything, call me right away or let the bodyguards know. They’re Penny’s people, good at what they do, and you can trust them.”

“Thank you… Mr. Lincoln. Really,” Sylvia murmured.

They chatted a bit more about Steve’s condition, then Emmy ended the call. She noticed the water had started to get cold, so she got out, dried off, and slipped into a soft nightgown before heading back to bed. She really must have been more tired than she realized, because as soon as her head hit the pillow, she was fast asleep.
