Emmy blinked, caught completely off guard, and before she knew it, James had her pinned to the sofa. She could barely believe this was happening here in the living room.
“James, the curtains...” she started nervously.
“Alexa, close the curtains,” he called out.
She didn’t even get to finish before his lips claimed hers again. The curtains responded to his voice, gliding silently closed and sealing them off from the world.
Before long, Emmy’s clothes were scattered on the rug like autumn leaves. James’s hands moved with a confidence that made her whole body melt, the tension slipping away until she felt boneless beneath his touch.
In the middle of her daze, she caught a glimpse of James with a small square wrapper in his hand, tearing it open easily with his teeth. Emmy stared, dumbfounded, and glanced around, realizing he’d pulled the packet straight out from between the sofa cushions.
She couldn’t help herself—she blurted out, “Seriously, do you hide these things in every corner of your apartment?”
James gave her a crooked, mischievous smile. While opening the packet, he murmured close to her ear, “So I can get you whenever and wherever I want.”
She opened her mouth to protest, but his lips cut her off fast. And with James’s hunger fueling every move, her protests faded quickly. Before she knew it, all her strength was gone and she’d melted in his arms, her mind blissfully empty.
When she finally came back to herself, more than an hour had passed. She was limp and weightless, curled up in James’s arms, barely able to move.
Meanwhile, James didn’t look the least bit ruffled. He sat on the sofa holding her, casual as ever. One hand was absentmindedly caressing her bare skin. The other had a thick document propped up as he read.
When he noticed she was awake, he dipped down to give her a gentle kiss on her forehead.
“You’re up?” he said, as if nothing unusual had happened.
He nudged the document toward her and announced, “My hands are busy. Can you turn the page for me?”
Emmy couldn’t believe it. Was he really reading work documents immediately after that? Was this some kind of legendary time management?
Grumbling, she reached out from under the thin throw to help. The blanket slipped away with the movement, exposing her skin—still marked, red and glowing, from his earlier devotion.

They ate a quick, simple lunch together. True to his word, James took her skydiving that afternoon.

But nobody could keep up that pace forever. By the morning of the third day, Emmy was wiped. The first thing she managed to blurt out was, “James, I’m sleeping in another room tonight!”
She looked over and realized the bed beside her was empty. James was already gone. Grabbing her phone, she saw his new message waiting for her:
Headed to the hospital for a bit. Take Penny out and try something fun. Be careful.
Finally, a taste of freedom. Emmy’s eyes sparkled. For once, James had loosened his grip, and she could finally enjoy a day of solo adventure.
